Central Locking

I am having problems with the central locking on my '99 Toledo 1.8 20v SE. When locking the car, the central locking switches off, not immediatly, but I cannot guarentee that my car is still locked when I return to it. Local auto spark says there is an earthing fault within the car! He recomends that I take the car to my nearest SEAT dealer as they have the specific software to deal with this. Is ther a problem with the central locking unit or is there a motor in the drivers side that could be causing this. Any answers. Thanx

I have a 1.8 S20v also a 1999.

I have been having problems with my locks for a while......they stay locked tho.
we think the problem is in the passenger locking mechanism. another thread recently showed that it could be the soldering in the mechanism.

It is a real can of worms to get to.......have taken it out......( and without manuals for the car) it was a nightmare.

My problem was the car locking but indicator lights not flashing, and also when you pressed the interior locking button on drivers side, they would lock and then unlock. something electrical in the passenger lock wasnt taking and sending the right signals. Can get new mechanism but the places i went to wanted over hundred quid.....(second hand).

I cant understand why the doors on your car would lock and then unlock.....usually it is the reverse.....unlock it.........dont open it and it locks after 30secs????

I'm having exactly the same trouble with my V5 (2000). The passenger doors (front or rear depending on which day of the week it is) don't always unlock properly.

Also, if you try to lock them using the central locking button on the drivers door, they tend to bounce down and then straight back up again!!

Originally noticed it a few months back when the indicators would not always flash when locking up. Took it back to the SEAT dealer, who had a look at it and said that they couldn't reproduce the problem, and that they had NEVER heard of anything similar !!!!

The only way to get to the bottom of this is using vag-com. Usually one of the locking solenoids will be faulty. Get an independant garage (many have vag-com) to run a test for about £20 - will highlight the problem. I think the solenoids or switches are between £50-£70 though.

Common fault across all VAGs (yep, another one). Had it on my Toledo also (was fixed under warranty).

most common fault is a bad earth on the door switches, open each door and watch if interior light comes on if it dont then theres your bad earth, clean the connections and check the switches, vag.com are good at ecu/ecm fixes but are not the answer to basic common faults like this

Thanks QMA, my Tolly has this prob on just the passenger door, using the drivers locking switch all doors will lock except the front passenger door, it will lock down and then bounce open again. I think you are correct in saying it is an earthing fault.....but which earths do you think it is?? at the switch on the drivers door or do I need to earth the front passenger lock itself? or is the door earth suspect? I want to get to the bottom of it but don,t want to try everything in turn, as knowing my luck it will be the last one. Thanks.

Just wanted to add that as you QMA have said, I checked the passenger door and it does not operate the interior light when I open it....comes on OK with driver side.
