Driving home last night, i lost power and while smoke starting coming from the exhaust, along with a weird noise, so I figured turbo had gone. I pulled over, just as I was doing so, teh engine went nuts and starting running away, was white smoke pouring out the exhaust and it was coming in the cabin so I had to get out, just stood and watched for about 30 seconds as the engine revved itself to death, even after the keys were taken out .... completely drained the oil.

Got the car towed home, and I havent touched it since.

So .... I need a new turbo, probably a new engine and possibly other bits.

The car is a 2001 Leon TDI SE with 107k on the clock, been fine up to this point apart from air con pump going (hadnt got round to replacing).

What do you think I should do. The car is getting on in age, and has the air con fault that needs a few hundred to fix.

I'm reluctant to get it looked at, as im sure they'll need to take the engine out and might end up costing loads in labour just to tell me that half of the car is broken. Engine and turbo alone is £800 from ebay without even thinking about labour costs.

Am I better off selling it as is, or getting it repaired?

Thanks in advance
Ben

if you try and sell it as it is you may not get a lot for it, your probably better off getting a 2nd hand engine and have that installed then sell it.

why didn't you try and stall the engine?? Seen this before but not on a leon, should have stuck it in 5th/6th to stall it.

heinsight is a wonderful thing, tbh i just saw smoke and got the hell out of there,

how much do you reckon it'll sell for? I think its worth 2k working, and I worked out the repairs at over 1000 for a new engine + turbo + labour and other bits that might've gone wrong.... £500?

thinking of using the oppotunity to upgrade to a bimmer/merc/audi/volvo estate for about 1.5-2k as i could do with the space

I did an engine replacement for a chap for 700quid supplied and fitted on an Octavia with the same engine but lucked out and found a cheap salvage one, getting rare now though.
