Catalytic converter needed - GSF ?

Hello,

I’ve been getting some strange noises from my car recently. Finally took it into the service centre and was told that it need a new catalytic converter.

The price of which was going to cost 770 pounds.

A colleague at work suggested that I try a company called GSF, got a quote from them of between 150 – 250

Seems like a big difference.

Does anyone know if there is a big difference in the quality of these two parts?

Also seems strange that the cat has gone a car that has done less than 25k miles.

Any advice greatly received.

who quoted you £770?

what car do you have, is it not under warranty?

I was quoted that at SEAT service centre in Berkshire / Surrey (won't name names)

Unfortuntley the car is way out of warranty. (52 plate)

Your best bet mate is to get the one from GSF, seat will charge you big money but it does sound a lot of money.

I take it the £770 was to fit it also?

Ask the guys at GSF what is the difference between the dealer part and there part, GSF stock a lot of OE stock that the dealers have.

I would buy the GSF cat and get a local garage to fit it, bloody rip off!

p.s what car do you have, i.e. spec as I will get a quote from my local dealer to see how much difference there is in the price.

Thanks I'd appreciate that.

Its a Leon 1.8 20v SE (non turbo)

770 was to fit - appearntly if the two probes either end burn out they are another 250 each !!

fella,

do you know your engine code? dealer has asked for it, is it AGN?

different prices you see, the probes are 02 sensors which dealer says could be up the duff, shame you dont have vag com as im sure you could find out if they are gone on that, BRB..........

No they said they'd connected it to the computer and they were okay.

Gave the impression they could go at anytime. First I'd know about would be a engine management warning light.

right been on the phone to the dealer, my local dealer has quoted £565 for the cat and has said that the sensors could be anything from £80-£125 each all depends on your engine code which should be stamped on your engine. (you might have to take the engine cover off and it should be stamped on the left, or your might have it with your documents)

so your price sounds about right but is a lot of money, I take it you are not driving your car around at the moment then?

I'm still driving it, only short distances to work though.

They made of point of stating that price did not come with the sensors. I'll phone and double check again.

up to you if you drive it but you obviously are aware that you run the risk of messing up the sensors.

best bet mate, unless you have the money and can afford to pay seat is to go to GSF and get that cat asap, ask GSF what difference there cat is compared to the dealer part, im sure it will be o.k and will save you ££'s.

if you want the tel number of the dealer I tried you are welcome to it which I will pm to you, the guy will be able to give you a price based on your engine code or you can give him your reg number, let me know.

I don't mind paying as long as its justified. I begrudged getting fleeced.

I'll speak to GSF and find out what the differences are. I'll then get the cost of my local mechanic fitting it
