right, done my head gasket again... went wrong the first time... tut.
right i started it after doing it and sounded like a truck... oops forgot to attatch the exhaust back on to the manifold. ok i think it was running ok when his happened, no i come to start it and it just wont start... it splutters and may run very sh1tly maybe at like 500 rpm if that, but wont do anything if i press the accelerator and then will just stall. ive wd40-d everything and all is put back together in the right place as far as i can see. i drained all he petrol out of the rail when i did the gasket, but i guess this wont be ofa problem as it will just fill back up on its own? any ideas what could be my issues.
Oh and his is on the GTi 2L 8V 2E engine

Thanks in advance

only way to know for sure is spark plugs out and dial guage down number one cylinder and check when piston reaches TDC.... then recheck your markings etc....

Thing is i have never worked on Ibizas so maybe other ways re: TDC markings etc

if no dial guage then a less dignified way is a screw driver down the plug socket..... but for god sake be careful lol..... it will not be dead accurate but you will get an idea.. if your markings are miles out....... best bet is do it properly though....

good thinking... so if i were to put a stick down the spark plug hole, when it was sticking out the most that would be when the engine bloack is at TDC... Ben logic :) thats a good way would never have thought of it, will definitely try it, at at this point the cam on the cam shaft shoul be in which position do you know?

i supose i could line the top sprcket at the TDC marking as long as it hasnt been altered after the blocks been done and then hope for the best

OOOH and welcome to the site

I`ve done it heaps on Golfs mate, same 8v motor.

Your timing will be a tooth out somewhere.

There is a Mark on the top wheel, on the inside that lines up with the top front of the head.

Then the two bottom wheels should have the mark pointing towards each other. Check with a screwdriver down no.1 spark plug hole.

Check the distributor timing at this point should be in the middle of its adjustment, pointing to no1 lead on the cap. The arm should point at the right hand corner of the block.

If this is all right, It will start.

I used to always get em one tooth out and they`d sound like a rotary.

You need to allow for the pulley adjustment when tightening the belt. All slack must be on that run, or it moves the other wheels.

Good Luck.
