Can you fit a diesel gearbox into a petrol engine?

HI there, I'm a new member and my name is Iwan.
Basically I have a 1.6 seat leon ( 55 plate) petrol. I've had the car for 10 months and has run like a dream, but unfortunately the gearbox died last week. I've rang everywhere and searched the local scrappy for a gearbox, but nothing has come avail. My father runs a scrap business too and reckons a diesel gearbox could fit into my car and work,.
Is he talking nonsense or could this actually work?
Thanks for the replies in advance.

You can swap them over with the 1.8t /1.9tdi but no as easy as just swapping the box...1.6 I don't think it's gonna be possible. Bell housing will surely be different.

It is physically possible for some models but the gear ratios are completely wrong. Result - one very sluggish car.

Anyway, there are loads on eBay?
