Camshaft Worn!! Any issues after replacement?

Hi, I know there is LOADS on here about Camshafts wearing on Seat Leon 1.9 PD150s and I have read almost all of it. What I want to know is has anyone ever replaced their camshaft, followers, etc and still had issues with either noise or running?

The main reason why I ask is because the other night on my way home my car began knocking its tits off at 3/4,000rpm and no EML so I took it to a VAG specialist the morning after it happened (only 5 minutes away, I work 30 minutes away) to see what they thought the noise was. The night it happened I started to research into the camshaft wear issue. So I thought it was worn camshaft, took it to the garage and they said it was the bottom end knocking and suggested I replaced the engine! (from what I found there is no proof they did anymore then listen to the car from the underside).

Not happy with their suggestion I towed my car to where I work (technician) and stripped the engine down a bit, I removed the rocker cover and turned it over to find a severely worn cam lobe on cylinder 3. I also removed the sump to check the big ends, no signs or wear etc so I am happy to replace the camshaft, but as I say has anyone ever had wear, replaced the camshaft and still had issues?

I am going to replace the oil pick up pipe, use diesel engine cleaner, and do 2 oil services to make sure any swarf is now cleared (none visible).

Sorry this is so long, just had a lot to say!! Thanks for reading.

I was under the impression that it was always the number 1 cam that wore out. Had mine done 80,000 miles ago and then recently had the camshaft checked again (perfect condition) but the rocket cover gasket now leaks a bit of oil.
I did change the oil to 5w30 507.00 spec on the garage's recommendation, but I believe that the oil has little to do with the camshaft wear and that it's actually the lifters that wear through and damage the cam.

Oh okay, that sounds good! What repair kit did you use? I'm thinking about going for Darkside Development camshaft kit. I have read it is to with the grade of oil, but obviously the actual design of the engine is much more at fault. I need to save up a bit, but I plan to fix my car in January.

I have finally got around to fitting my camshaft kit, the terrible knocking noise has now gone, and I have been enjoying driving my FR again this week! Thanks again for the messages.
