Hi,

Fancy doing my cambelt in the near future as I have no history on the car and it's nearing 100k. Haven't done one before though have read in some posts that it's fairly straightforward with a Haynes at hand and should only take a couple of hours or so...

What I wan't to know is what all will I require for the change? Basically so I can start ordering bits up.

Any tips appreciated.

Cheers

yours is a 2.0 8v I think...

in which case you need a cambelt and tensioner as bare minimum, and then if you want to do anything else then you'll need an aux drive belt (ribbed belt) and you could also replace the waterpump while you're at it with one with a metal impellor ;)

I did the cambelt and tensioner on my 2.0 8v when I had it, and it took me 2 hours from start to finish, and that was the first one I had ever done, just with Haynes as a guide ;)

Main thing is to take it steady, and to check the timing marks at every stage :D

Going to change my timing and aux belts shortly aswell... Did you hire out the engine locking tools or did you already have them? Whichever it was, where did you get them from, and can you remember how much they were?

I know you should change the water pump when you change the cambelt on a petrol model, but does that go for diesel (TDI) models aswell? I've got a Haynes but before looking through it, do you know if the water pumps are in roughly the same place on petrol and diesels? Thanks.

Cheers Andy. Where'd you get the required bits?

May do the aux belt as well i guess. Take it thats fairly straight forward also? Is the water pump packing in a commopn issue?

I got the bits I needed from either GSF or Eurocarparts.... can't quite remember which ! or it may have been Ebay....

water pump issue is mainly on the newer models where they used a plastic impellor as standard, which disintergrates after a while! still worth doing though while you've got the aux drive belt off

ive just changed my water pump on my mk2 1.4.the bearings were gone and the plastic propeller was spinning on the metal shaft therefore making my car over heat.got mine from euro car parts.) plus the replacement had a metal propeller.)
