Cam sensor or crank fault, 1.6tdi

Not long into a journey after a cold start my 1.6tdi will cut out and refuse to start, leave it a bit and it's fine and the eml will no longer be on.

Here is the vcds scan, hope someone can assist. I have checked and cleaned the cam sensor as it was a little dirty but the faults below have returned.

A lot of this can be caused by an old battery/weak alternator. I would suggest checking those two first.

From the logs I see there is a crank shaft error as well. Also you have ABS and electric faults, could you post those in greater detail as well.

It's twice it's done it now, within 5 minutes of starting the car, cut out on the same stretch of road, same morning commute.

How would a garage pin point such a fault, would love to solve it myself as love tinkering! But suspect this one might be a garage job.

Have you checked the wiring to the cam sensor and the earth point? It's possible that either the sensor itself, or the wiring, is causing the issue as it gets warm from the engine heat etc

It looks like the 5 volt sensor reference is interrupted or pulling down beneath 5v. Can be caused by the ecu or an other actuator. Or the timing of your distribution is not right. Seen the mileage did it been replaced ?

Well, new cambelt fitted, with a new cam sensor and Service, 4 weeks later the fault is back!

Can garages not pinpoint the route cause on intermittent faults? I know the cam and crank sensors work together but surely in today's tech mad world they should be able to replace the exact part!

They have replaced the crank sensor, struck up OK, idled fine, went down the road, cut out again, same faults! They have checked all the wiring too so might have to get the ecu tested. They said they have never had a car like it!

Well it turns out the master technician was on holiday and the other guys only know how to do what the computer tells them and don't think outside the box! The timing had slipped a tooth, all fixed!
