I wouldn't mate. I dont know if it will work, not something you want to ( test ). If it doesn't work, good bye engine.

tell me what the exact spec of the motor that you are going to be running .
and i'll tell you if its worth doing something else ecu wise

1.9 (83mm) pistons
supertech valves/springs and retainers
equal length mani
gt3071r
standard ecu with custom map.

what difference does that make?

then if you want it to work correctly day in day out ditch all the standard ecu and go for one of these:
http://www.dtafast.co.uk/S_80_PRO.htm

they now do the loom for the 1.8 20vt and all uprated sensors to go with
youll be running a fixed map so it wont need (but you can if you want) to run an 02 sensor
you also have the option of running antilag (which you can turn off if you want like all rally cars)

i wont be using the tensioner then.

are the tensioner internals interchangeable? i know the main spring part comes out easily..

Its for emissions crap when idling. The yanks swap out the VVT for the fixed type, so they are interchangable, but I don't know how the cam profiles differ (if at all).

Just run a non VVT tensioner.

I see your point. I hadn't considered the economics. Just had a look at the prices for my audi (so similar price to seat). Non vvt adjuster = £95 + vat. VVT Adjuster = £255 + vat.

Anyway, you can swap them over. If disconnected it should behave just like the non vvt item. Do a search on vwvortex.com, you should see a few threads on the subject.
