Buying a PC

I'm seriously thinking about buying a porter cable because I've read lots of good things about them and I have a Focus that could do with a bit of TLC before I sell it (also allows me to practice before I start on my LCR! ).

Does anyone know where I can get a discount code for Autopia or can someone pm me with one please?

I did search and read something from m0rk about trying to get a discount code for SCN, did anything come of this?

searchy on here for the pc AND the rotary polisher types mate, think twice before spending over 5 times what you need to spend.

brendy, I have noticed that on most threads regarding the PC you have advocated using the silverline rotary as a cheaper and more effective alternative.

however, all the advice from seemingly everyone else (e.g. reg) is that these can be lethal to your paintwork in the wrong hands?

the impression this creates is that merely touching your car with a rotary is gonna ruin the paintwork, surely it cant be THAT drastic or noone would use them? I would have thought that using just the weight of the polisher, good quality soft pads and a quick steady motion would be fairly safe?

a pc also rotates to a certain extent fella, ive posted pictures of how it helped my front wings on the cupra. Dont let a few people who have blatantly not tried using one, put you off. Remember these things have speed settings from 0-4,5 maybe even 6k rpm.
The rotary uses the same pads as the pc so its not the pads that are the problem, its people whacking the rpm up to full whack and pressing down heavily on the paint, even with a pc youre not supposed to do that.
I will be first to admit that a rotary in a retards hands is destined to be a disaster but if you value your paint you will go easy until you build up a little confidence. Try it, its 35 quid wasted if you dont like it, 200+ iof you dont like the pc too though!

ye, I appreciate what you're saying brendy and its very tempting (purely from a financial perspective). I am very wary however of giving it a go and ending up needing to pay a couple of hundred quid for a panel respray.

what to do.....

has anyone else had a go with a rotary and achieved good results without ruining their paint?

I use a rotary polisher though i have done for years so dont see the point in changing
you do need to be more carefull with a rotary than somthing like a porter but not that much more imho

On the other hand i went straight for a PC but halved the cost with a mate .... you'd need to be a total animal on SEAT paint to cause problems with a PC. I would speak to Rich @ polishedbliss about pads and product ... very helpful and very knowledgeable - whether you go rotary or orbital is your choice

I to am thinking about buying a PC but after what i've read maybe the silverline's the way to go. If your worried about your paint why not but a panel from a scrappy for some practice?

I have bought the orange silverline with the slow start (picking it up from the delivery people tonight because they wont deliver when im actually at home! (grrr).

Have ordered a 5" backing plate from ebay and am going to order some megs pads. Also emailed the guys at polished bliss and they advised me to use Menzerna intensive and final finish for my jobs. Unfortunately these are out of stock everywhere so until I can get some I will start by cleaning the focus and repairing the chips and scratches.

I have a PC, but have just bought a Silverline orange rotary because the Seat paint is so damn hard.

Menz is good, but be careful as it is abbrasive so will remove paint

Like everything else, there are different Menzerna products from fine to coarse. Make sure you know exactly what you are getting, and use it accordingly. Always use the least aggressive combination of pad and product to do the job - aim for maximum reduction of defects with minimal removal of clearcoat. Good technique will mean you don't have to savage your paint work with a cutting pad and heavy cutting polish like some people insist on doing.

I don't totally disagree with Brendy about the rotary (although I still wouldn't buy the cheap Silverline jobbie, but then my Metabo gets used nearly everyday), the points I have raised previously have just been to point out the fact that for a hobby detailer the PC is a safer and easier option to use. A rotary will get better results quicker but with time and patience the PC will do the job. Some people just don't seem to get on with a rotary, but try scrap panels first and practice. For £35 I suppose its worth a punt. You'll often find that bodyshops will give you panels that are to be discarded for free.
