Buying a Leon

Hi Chaps,

Probably not really the right forums to post this, but I figure after reading around you're the most active forum I can find on SEAT so I'd be really grateful if you'd be able to offer me some advice.

I'm looking to buy a car, and I've narrowed my sights down to either the Leon, or the Mazda 3. I'm after a Diesel (though not likeing the price of it at the moment) and was looking at the Stylance 1.9TDI. I know that you guys here will probably be 99% for SEAT, but I'd really appreciate some advice.

Looking into the power output of both the cars (the Mazda3 is a 1.6 TS2 in the Diesel) the Leon is chucks out 105PS, whislt the Mazda has an output of 109PS - I'm not really into cars that much, as this would be my first "own" car - so I'm a bit bothered that the Leon 1.9 may be a bit sluggish for the size of the car. I can't really afford to go much higher than the stylance, as around 14k is my limit. I'm really after new, as I want to be sure that the car is ok - hence my decision.

The Leon comes with a lot more for the money, and is cheaper than the Mazda, which is making me lean towards it.

I've been driving my fiancee's C3 for a while, so I'm sure anything will be better than that - but as she's using it for work now its about time I had a car to be able to get places :)

Any owners of the 1.9 Stylance around ? - if so would you be able to tell me a bit about your experience with them (I really just want a nice looking, reasonably price, and reliable car - which also performs well). I've been told that the Diesels keep their value more so than petrol equivilants, and as I'll be doing some long runs I think this would be my better choice.

Any info/pointers would be appreciated,

Thanks,
Chris

Edit:

Oh yes, looking at the stats of the Stylance, it doens't come with ESP for example, when some of the lower models do - why is this? Is it just down to cost or somthing? Are SEAT trying to push Value Added Services/Items onto new buyers?

I test drove the 100 ps petrol equivalent and must say it felt anemic next to the 2.0 TDI. I can't look into your pocket but then again you don't new cars every day.

I know you want a new car, but I think it's worth taking a test drive in a Mk1 Leon Cupra / FR TDI as you obviously wouldn't mind a bit of 'go'.

The Mk1 TDI's are fairly bullet-proof and if you are buying a recent example (which is within your budget) then I would doubt it will give you any grief.

In my opinion the styling of the Mk1 is much better than the Mk2, but then I am biased.

But if you have your heart set on a new car then take them both out for a test drive and sit each salesman down to get their best deal before you decide as the drive / deal should swing it one way or another.

Do you really need a car that big? Why not go down a size of car to an Ibiza/Polo which are still quite big inside, have reasonable boots, offer good crash protection and are still quite a few grand cheaper than the Golf/Leon platform cars. You could get a lot of slightly smaller car for less than 14k.

Ya, the size of the cars are what attracted me to them, I was going to test drive both the petrol and diesel stylances today, but alas I've got to go to some bleeding christmas market with the "boss" :/

I've tried drivethedeal.com - but it just sems to be loading for ever when you choose your car. I'll try it on a windows PC or somthing though incase its something to do with my browser/OS.

Thanks for the replies though :)

Ah, drive the deal works now... how reliable are these chaps? I'd be a bit hesitant about buying a car online, as 12-14k as an online purchase is a bit more than I've bought over the net before :)

Also, are you able to choose your colour on that site? I can't see any options for it?

You are not buying the car over the internet as you put it. Drivethedeal do all the donkey work for you, that's all. You actually pay the supplying dealer direct after you are happy with the car.
I would try dealnegotiator also - they are slightly cheaper for the same thing.
