Burnt out Alternator?

Had a bad smell in car this morning (no not another one of my farts! lol)

Defo a burning smell,,bonnet up and it seems to be coming from the alternator and the casing is red hot!
Engine management light has been coming on and off a few times the past 2 weeks and is now on permanantly, could this be the reason? is it burnt out- smells like it is,
Anyone had this problem before?....

cheers people

it could be a colapsed bearing which is causeing the friction which gives the heat, and if the alternator has been flucuating in voltage output the ecu would detect it as a fault, even if it isnt the case if its smelly and heating up like your saying i would have it out for fear of the car catching although its unlikely but why chance it.
