Filled up with petrol and brimmed it as usual to the nearest quid and when I got home, slipped her in the garage, got out and was about to shut the garage door when I heard a gurgling / breathing / bubbling noise coming from around the O/S rear wheel arch near the fuel filler cap...

It was a very warm day, about 29/30 degrees - anyone else heard this noise at all? It was very repetative, about every 5 seconds at first.

I wonder if the hot day had made the fuel expand and it needed to take in air to the tank?!?!?! Never heard anything like it!

Cheers

More like the tank is over filled, and is tryign to expand with the vapours, very dangerous, especially in this heat, the click off point when you fill up is to leave a safe expansion limit in the tank.

The gurgling is probably the fuel overflow, there is a pipe behind the rear wheel, under the tank, that maybe what is making the sound.

Fill up in the evening anyway, fuel is cooler, and you get a bit more for your dollars. ;)

Yeh, don't brim it - the extra space left in the tank is for the vapour etc - otherwise u'll lose it out of the car, no doubt onto a road, and cause danger to everyone, esp motorbikes as above :(

It's only petrol, not diesel (which kills bikers every year from brimming) but fresh petrol is still bloody dangerous.
