Brakes on whilst driving?

Hey,

On my way to work I noticed that the car seemed a little slower to pick up that usual and that the MPG wasn't anywhere near the same as it usually is on the motorway. It almost feels like the brakes are on whilst moving. It is most evident over 50mph.

When I got out of the car I had a quick look at the brakes. The pads on the front are a few millimeters away from the disc but the back passenger pad (not sure about the rear passenger pad) is touching the back disc. Is this right? The car was off so maybe this has something to do with it.

Excuse me as I'm not too knowledgable about this kind of thing.

Mike.

the rears should be close, as you use them they adjust out to stay near to the disk it has something to do with the hand brake if im not wrong. i would imagine if you had a brake on you would smell the pads burning after a while?

mind you if the car was off and parked, and your hand brake on i would like to think the rear should be touching

The back pads should be almost touching. If they were during the journey than either the handbrake was not disengaged properly and this should be evident with a flaming hot disc.
Other things could be at fault, what model do you have?

Its a Seat Leon FR TDi Mk1.

I'll see what its like on my way home. If it feels the same I'll get someone to sit in it with the engine running, handbrake off and foot off the brakes so that I can walk round and see what its like.

It could be one of the rear caliper carryers sticking or jamed up i had this for a while easy way to check is go for a couple of mile spin when you park up flick a little water on to either disk if it spits and pops youve found which carryer is jamed up:)

Since I made this post, it seems ok now. Hopefully, it will never return again but i'll monitor it.

I'm going to check out my brakes though. I'll ask someone to sit in it with the handbrake off, brakes off, and engine on so I can walk round and have a look.
