Brakes! mileage/journey type?

I've done about 10K miles from new in my std Leon FR and have noticed recently its not stopping as quick as it used to. 10K miles seems pretty low but most of my driving is the 'stop- go' type city driving with a lot of braking.

Just wondered when have folk replaced their brakes? I know it depends on journey types.

I'll check my tyres too, especially the fronts!

Also what type of brakes have people replaced with? standard or are there any others you can recommend, I need quick stopping, responsive brakes, not necessarily racing style brakes but you something responsive enough.

Also anyone know if places like Kwik Fit can fit brakes of your own choice? or are places such as Kwik Fit not recommended? I don't know how to fit brakes so would be looking for them to be fitted.
Any help appreciated.

I strip my brakes down once a year and clean pad running surfaces and apply copper slip to relevant areas. This usually has an instant improvement in performance.
Have you tried this?

20K so far on original brake pads/disks - Service is coming up soon, so I'm sure they'll tell me if I need new one's - brakes still seem pretty decent though !

Nearly done 30k miles since new last September and still have all original discs and pads.

I have looked at EBC as an option to upgrade just under £500 incl Vat for new drilled and groved discs all the way around with pads. I was quoted a maximum of 2hrs to fit them at a private garage.

Forgive me if this sounds stupid, but could there be a 'getting used to it' factor involved here?

It's like getting used to the power of a new car, at first it seems so different and superb... but overtime it becomes normal and loses the edge it once had. The same could apply to the brakes? Perhaps you are getting used to the way they feel and how to get the best of them?

But, having said that, brakes aren't something you want to take a risk on, so would be worth getting them checked over at least :)

well, I've had the car over a year so I should be well used to it now. Its something I've noticed deteriorating since I'd say about June/July when the car was a year old. The stopping times are slower it takes longer to slow the car down and stump the brade pedal. Tyres could be an issue. I'm have to see which it is. Its handling is suffering due to these slower times.
