My TDI DSG is having it's 40k service and they've called to say that the rear discs and pads have gone and that the fronts are not far off!

Is it normal for them to go after 40k and for the rear ones to go first?

My rears went after about 12,000 which I wasn't too pleased about.... [jugger, scratched etc etc] the back ones never worked properly as far as I could see looking at the contact marks and lack of it. I reckon there was something faulty with the factory fit ones myself.

If it's any help, the rear discs on my Ibiza needed replacing around 40k - not due to wear (the rears don't do much work), but because the discs corrode quite badly (especially round the outer edge).
Think it's fairly common...12k is a bit early though.

I have noticed that when washing car after i get home from work or a drive, if any water get near the rear brakes they seem very hot, almost hotter than the fonts (more steam etc, although i try not to hit hot discs with cold water!!). Just thinking this would then mean them working more than the fronts, or just not the optimum setup for these cars, too small rear disc/pad or both?
