Hi Guys,

I thought I would put this link up to a post on a TT forum from 2006 about a possible total brake failure on the car caused by a water pipe? rubbing against the brake pipe from the master cylinder http://www.tt-forum.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=98306&hilit=brake+master+cylinder

It seems more likely after a cambelt change but as there are more and more higher milage LCRs around it might be good to refresh.

Pics of suspect area are on page 3 of the thread.

Just found it by mooching around forums and didn't know about it myself.

This happened to my LCR just two weeks ago!!

I was driving and noticed the brake pedal travel was getting longer. When i pulled over i noticed smoke coming from the bonnet. Couldnt work out where it was coming from. No leaks from the car.

Anyway, removed a few pipes and got my brother to pump the brakes, there were two pin holes in the brake pipe from the master cylinder :censored: The smoke was caused my the fluid hitting the exhaust manifold.

The pipe was worn not by a power steering pipe but another pipe, which goes to the turbo. If you have a look at the around that area you can see what it is.

Thought mine was just a one off, but it doesnt look like it is!

Now the worst part, replacing the pipe! I have done a fair bit of mechanical work over the years, and this was one of the hardest things i have ever had to do! Removed a ton of pipes, water bottles, heat sheilds, engine mounts, had to drop the engine down as far as i could as the pipe runs from the master cylinder, around the back of the engine to the ABS pump on the passenger side of the car.

And after all that the ABS pump had to be bled, and then all the brakes too. Did all that and i still think my brakes are not quite as good as they should be.

£26 for the pipe, shudder to think how much it would cost if you took it to a main dealer for them to fit it.

You have been warned! Make that pipe!!!!!

I have just had exactly the same problem with my Seat Leon FR - brakes failed completely on the M4 - it was a nerve wracking drive home but made an exciting change!! - a mechanic had a quick look and said that another pipe has been rubbing against the brake pipe and caused it to fail.
I had my cam belt changed about 4 months ago - was this the cause of the problem?
Cheers,
Mat.
