Brake Discs -Warped ?

Hi all,

Has anyone fitted new brake discs to their motor (Toledo, Leon, Ibiza....). I had a set fitted to the front approx 4K ago along with pads. The discs seemed to have warped quite badly so much as under light to moderate braking I get a nasty wobble / shake through the steering wheel. OK if I stand on the brakes hard.

I know keeping the brake pedal pressed down whilst stationary when the discs are hot can cause this, but have been careful not to do this (handy thing called handbrake).

Anyone else had this experience ? Does it tend to improve as the discs wear ? Or is it worth making a complaint to get a new set fitted ?

If you have warped discs then they'll still judder when you press hard.....

Sounds weird - I'd get them to have a look.

they would wobble under any kind of braking

altho if ur handbrake has been on when they are hot, you could warp the rear discs, ive done this before on my old 8V.

From what you say if it were warped disc/s then the vibration would always happen. So, I decided to experiment on my way to work today by perfoming a few moderate braking manouveres at various speeds and locations. Turns out that sometimes it doesn't happen at all, and sometimes it's really bad. Almost as if the road surface has something to do with it ??

Any thoughts - tyres perhaps ??

Want to try and get some idea of why it happens, otherwise I will take it in to be looked at and sods law it won't happen.

Had a similar thing happen to me, actually happened twice. Both time thought it was discs, but it never was!

1st time was on the Corsa (notorious for warping discs). Ended up being the brake pads.

2nd time was on the BMW. Car was parked in garage for almost 6 months. Car started wobbling at almost any speed, but was only easily noticeable at highway speeds. Ended up being the tires which are out of round.

Pads glazed or bits broken off perhaps? Whip em off and see.

Had the Toledo jacked up and front wheels off at the weekend to have a good inspection. Could see no visible run out on the discs, but did spot that the nearside outer pad did not seem to be sitting completely square to the disc, so looks like only half the pad is making contact with the disc under braking.

Reckon this could be the cause of the vibration. Going to swap them out for some better quality pads next weekend. I wasn't too impressed with them anyway.

That could definitely be the source of your problem. If you don't mind dirty wheels and/or cleaning them a bit more go with pagid fast road pads. I don't have them in the toledo yet, but they where certainly great in the beeza.

I run Greenstuff on my Ibiza. Much better than stock pads, giving better intial bite and stronger braking performance all round. Little evidence of fade (even on stock discs), needs no warming up. Done 10k on these now and am quite impressed. I thought they'd be dead by now but still going strong. Not noticed their supposed 'less dust' performance cos I don't count days between wheel washes.

Despite liking htese pads I will try pagid FRs next, just as a comparison, and hope to be even more impressed.

The Toledo was in for service yesterday and the dealer has confirmed that the discs have a slight amount of warpage, which is causing the brake vibration.

Fair play to SEAT they have agreed to change them under warranty

I live on the south coast, which dealer did you go to for the service ???
My 1999 Toledo 1.8 20v S went for a service two weeks ago and they said the discs where probably warped as vibration was felt through the steering wheel.
After seeing your reply I rang my local dealer and asked if they could be done under warranty, but it appears that the mileage(31,000) is too much for them to do as a warranty job. They did say that they could try, but would mean paying up front and then the dealer claiming back from SEAT.
Decided to let my brother-in-law have look as he is Dealer Mechanic anyway.

I have trouble with warped discs with my '99 Toledo TDiSE. I don't brake very hard. At 30,000 miles or so I had to have them replaced. At 60,000 miles the second set of discs felt warped. Now at over 71,000 miles they still haven't changed them even though they needed a change at 60,000 miles. ( They obviously wanted my servicing bill to not go too high). Do Seat use different discs compared to the VW and Audis? I would be interested if someone knows the truth about it.

I've not had this problem. My ibiza did 220000km with the same discs. dito for the Golf. Then again the toledo has 92000km and still on the OE brake pads

Had my original discs replaced at 60,000 and agin at 90,000. The discs fitted at 90,000 warped gradually over the next 10,000. So replaced those. Next pair warped gradually over the next 20,000. Have just had a new pair fitted (~ 1,000 miles ago) and I can feel them starting to warp too. My mechanic is mystified. Anyone got any ideas?
