Im after a boost gauge for my 1.9tdi and wondered what info people had to offer? I have done a search before anyone says but I want to get the latest :) I want to know of any good makes and what the difference between electrical and mechanical is. Ive seen this 1:

To go with this:

Im eventually going to get an oil pressure gauge in the other hole but for now i might just get a stop watch or something. All info welcome!

I was thinking of getting a boost gauge to replace one of the air vents, 57mm gauge maybe?

I have the oil and battery gauges anyway - mine came with them :)

How about the 52mm TIM single guage holder, cut it about to fit in the air vent and block off that vent?

Similar for MK4 Golfs and Corrado's i've seen...

Im not sure about cutting and blocking things off, the cars dash isnt that great to start with so I start messin with it god know what will happen! Any way pillar pods look more "race tuned" lol

Dont agree tbh because you dont look out of the windscreen when your at a junctions, its the side window i use....which isnt blocked by the pillar pod.

Does anynoe know about the electric and mechanical difference?

Best place for gauages i found in the MK4 is in the pocket below the stereo. You can get two and three gauage holder for about £10 that fit straight in.

Ive gone for the pillar pod at the mo. I can always send it back if i dont like it but im sure i will. Just trying to get the right gauge that'll match the dash and actually do an accurate job of reading boost. ill keep you updated!!

I got the boost gauge in the post today, its an electrical one which doesnt tap into an intercooler pipe. Instead the instructions show it with a 'T' shaped tube (bit like a junction for air) which needs to be put in the pipe leading to the surge tank? This allows boost to go to the surge tank and also the boost sensor which then sends the reading to the gauge..........so i need to know where the surge tank is? I hope its not just a petrol thing. All help appreciated.

hmmm i had a mechanical gauge on mine was simple to fit, just drilled a small hole in the plastic intercooler pipe, screwed a brake bleed nipple, used RTV to seal it and connected the vaccuum line on and away you go. was quite noisey though

What make and model is the gauage ? I have an SPA electric gauage and that taps into the boost pipework same as a mechanical aguage.

Sounds like a mechanical boost gauge to me with electric used for the backlighting. An electric boost gauge doesn`t come with a pipe but a boost censor that wires direct in the gauge. Below is a picture of my boost censor, it`s the one one the left of the alloy pipe.

All that connects to the gauge is 2 wires, one for the back lighting and the other one is from the boost sensor. The piping is only used to connect the boost sensor to the "surge tank"???

Thats the same one as I've got mate.

I took the feed from the top of the dv and through the little grommet where the bonnet relese comes through to the engine bay. That tube goes into the little stepper motor which has an electrical connection to the actual gauge, just like steps 5 and 6 in the instruction (iirc you have to joine the wires togeather[only three wires[).
Then I took the power from the headlight switches using them snap type connectors (you need to connect black to a -voltage wire[normaly black on the car to[ and you neet to connect the red to a + voltage [normaly red on a car to] and you need to connect either the orange or the white wire [depends on what colour you want it to light up] to the same place as the as the red wire.

Hope this helps you mate

Take another look at my previouse reply mate, its got a link to when I fitted the same gauge
