Bluetooth Phone Book Issue

Hi chaps

Got a new phone (Nokia 6500) and paired it up fine in the Leon, and it uploaded the phone book, last numbers dialled, etc.

WIth my last phone I had saved some "voice dials" in the car which I wanted to delete, so I said "delete phone book" thinking this referred to the voice tags.

Regrettably of course I misunderstood and is has erased my entire mobile's phone book from the MFD display.

I have deleted the Seat from the list of devices in the Nokia, and gone through the whole "re-pairing" exercise and entering the PIN again etc, but all to no avail. I cannot get it to re-upload the phone book.

I connected my old phone and bang, all the numbers are back. But when I connect the new phone, the phone book list on the MFD is empty again.

Also tried adding a contact or two, but still no joy.

Does anyone out there have any clues as to how I can force another upload after the mistake of deleting the phone book?

How long have you waited for the 'phone contacts to appear?

The reason I ask is because I thought my 'phone was not updating the uploaded book when I added/deleted/changed contact info.

Synchronisation doesn't appear to be instantaneous.

Leaving the 'phone connected to the car via Bluetooth for a while seems to 'sort' itself.

My mobile is a Nokia 6230i by the way, and I quite like the look of the 6500 slide, so I'm interested in the outcome

Hello mate

To be honest I have had it on just for a few seconds. What I will do is drive around a bit later and see if giving it a few minutes does the trick.

PS The 6500 slide is absolutely fantastic (I'm coming from a 6111). Could not recommend it highly enough. Happy to answer any questions you have

Nokia phones don't seem to upload the phonebook. Check out the Bluetooth Compatibility sticky thread at the top there...

I don't know if this is relevant or not, but when I got my n73 I couldn't get my Parrot CK100 kit to show the phone book. Apparantly some of the newer Nokias have the Symbian operating system which has a lot of missing functionality with regards to bluetooth car kits.
I downloaded an update from the nokia website which gives me the phone book but not signal strength or battery indicator which I got with my last phone.

Si, I had the same combo and was hoping that my N95 would work properly with my Leon but it doesn't... I found a Symbian app that is supposed to 'push' the phone book to a device but that didn't work

I even tried sending a contact by BT with no joy either... Apparantly the new Nokia phones don't implement the Phone Book Access Profile (PBAP) in their BT implementation. Go here and you will see a lot of dissatisified Nokia owners...

Personally, I'm going to swap my N95 for a Sony Ericsson as soon as I can.

I tried a 6500 Classic, and it uploaded the phonebook straight away. Although it refused to delete the phonebook afterwards.

As I understand it, the phonebook is a per phone thing.... i.e. only the phone which uploads the numbers can access them...

Fully understand that mate - I'm aware of the issues with N series Nokias etc. The fact that Mark successfully uploaded his contacts when first pairing his 6500 slide means that this model appears to 'work'.

I'm intrigued as to why the contacts do not 'reload'.

I wanted to know whether his particular 'phone managed to restore the 'phone book after a short while, as my 6230i doesn't synchronise instantaneously.

Sorry, I have just re-read the OP. To clarify, it is the Symbian based Nokias which are pants on the BT front...

To the OP - have you deleted all traces of the pairing on the phone?

Put a old sim card into your new phone and pair it with the BT. If there are numbers on the card it should sync.
Put the proper card into your new phone and reconnect to the BT. This should update the BT accordingly. Bit of ball-ache but it should work.

OK, to answer Emm's question, no it has not reloaded even after about a 3 hour drive.

I was actually about to write to Seat, but I will follow Richie D's advice about swapping with a different SIM and see what happens.

Seems to be a bit of a nightmare to be honest!

You definitely have numbers stored on the new sim?

Just try adding some new contacts to the sim before connecting to the BT.

This is all a bit of a mystery....


Thinking 'out loud' here;

From what you've said, the car can read the contacts from a 'phone, so the car kit appears OK.

Putting in an old SIM (as suggested by Richie) loads the contacts, confirming the above, and that the 6500 itself is sucessfully communicating with the car kit.

Does the car display show entries for previous calls etc from either SIM?

My 6230i is set just to read from it's internal memory only (to prevent potential contact duplication in the car's 'phone book by reading the SIM as well). How is yours set?

Can you 'see' the contacts on your 6500 with the old SIM installed?

Can you 'see' the contacts on your 6500 with the new SIM installed?

Did you delete the pairing after uploading from the old SIM, before reinserting the new SIM back in the 'phone?

Do you/did you have contacts stored on the 'phone itself - that is, how did you get your concts into your new 'phone?

Could it be that you have contacts on the old SIM (but the new SIM is empty), your contacts on the new phone are stored in the 'phone's memory, and this particular 'phone can only upload contacts from the SIM? (which would be a deal-breaker for me)

Can't think what else to suggest at the moment....

Oh crap, I have an N95 too and had all but decided to buy a new Leon in the new year, and the BT kit was a big selling point to me. I suppose there's no fix for this unless Nokia release a firmware update?

I thought though that nothing was saved on the car's memory and that it reuploaded every time you switched the engine on?

I have two phones that I intend to pair so I assume it would need to reallocate itself each time I swapped phone? Maybe that's something to try as well?

I certainly wouldn't let a phone dictate which car I was buying! Yes, Nokia need to release a firmware fix. Everything apart from uploading the phone book works, you can accept calls, make calls and can save numbers with voice dialling in the car, you just can' t access your phone book...

To confirm, I believe all of my names & numbers are stored in the PHONE memory and not the SIM.

The fact that first time around it worked perfectly OK, we have to assume that the phone and the car are working OK and are set up correctly.

The problem has only occurred since I mistakenly selected the "delete phone book" command, thinking it referred to the car memory voice tags, and it wiped out the uploaded list from the phone.

Trying the various combinations of phones and SIMs, we can tell that the car can seemingly "remember" the phone+SIM combination, recall that I deleted the phone book in one of the combinations, and refuses to allow any further uploads.

Also I can confirm that inbetween switching SIMS around, I did indeed delete the pairings and therefore forced the setup from scratch with PIN request. This made no difference.

Also I have tried to add new contacts whilst it's connected to see if it picks that up and forces an upload, which it hasn't.

This is where I am at the moment:

1. I have actually asked for my mobile number to be changed so I can keep my old number. This "porting" is going to happen later in the week, so I will see if that has any effect.

2. Failing that, I may write to Seat and ask what can be done about it.

3. I wonder how I can actually do what I originally wanted to do, which was to delete the car memory voice tags?

4. I wonder why Seat don't make it clear about the terminology of "phone book" and at least warn you that if you delete a book it will make it damn difficult/impossible to get it back!

I will of course report back all my findings, probably next will be later in the week when I hopefull have the phone number ported across.
