Blown turbo and continuing problems

Hi alli..

I have an Ibiza Cupra PD160 with remap, panel filter and exhaust with no muffler and cat.

Last week blown my vnt17 turbo and decided to put a little big head to the stock vnt17 turbine and manifold..

My aim was to make an hybrid vnt17/22 but the place that I sent my blown turbo has repaired my turbo with a bigger "air pump" than vnt22.. He said that, that head came out from a x5 3.0d....real big...

the problem is that there is no boost at low rpms. in 3rd or 4rd gear it reaches to 25 psi just before 3500 rpms.. As I remember that should came before 2000rpms..

Why is this happening?

I thought that it would spool earlier with a bigger head:confused:

I ll post pictures of my turbo soon.

Interesting choice, what sort of power did you want from the vnt17/22 hybrid?

Id have gone for a hybrid V6 TDi turbo from the Audi range personally. However your problem, your right about the boost. My old KKK turbo was peaking at around 2.1k and id imagine the same can be said about my new hybrid turbo that is good for 260bhp.

Have you checked with vag-com to see if its requesting boost but just not getting it lower down, or is it not even asking for it?

It would be ok if the boost came around 2.1k but it spools after 3300 3500rpms at 3rd gear.

We increased fueling around 30% at lower rpms but still there is no boost..

Turbos on the X5 are either a GT2256V or a GT2260V depending on year and model. If your still running a 17 inlet the turbo isn`t able to suck in enough air for the 56 or 60 exhaust side as it is a very bad match. Even if you did run a proper GT2256V or a GT2260V you would still find the turbo would have a lot of lag as it is a very big turbo for a small engine which is why it was fitted to a 3 liter engine to start with not a 1.9 liter. Unless your using uprated injectors or have another fuel source like propane or water/methanol a turbo that size is a waste of time as you will not be able to inject enough fuel when the turbo starts to boost anyway.

devonmikeyboy, the exhaust side is still 17 but the inlet is now gt22...

As I read many people made the same conversion but didnt face with this problem...

As the exhaust side remain same and the inlet goes bigger the turbo sould spool earlier?? Am I wrong:)

I would suggest its either
1.The n75 is miss matched to the turbo build.
2. mal adjusted vnt rod.
(if the vnt is still incorporated)?
Can we also assume the correct connections for vacuum

I changed the compressor side of my turbo because when I measured it and compared it with garretts website I understood that this turbo was gt28xx:)

Now I have gt2052 compressor with my vnt17vb exhaust side but the boost still came around 2500rpms. Can it be because of the lenght of the actuator rod??

And another problem is when I apply full throttle at 1000rps turbo never spools:) but if I apply like 95% on throttle it spools...

2 questions, were did the turbo come from and who has map'd it??

I've fitted turbo's with much larger wheels than a 330D and they would make 28 PSi just by reving the car on the spot!!

A TD phase 2 uses a similar comp wheel to a 330D and they boost real low in the RPM range pretty much like a stock one to be honest

the compressor side came from 2.4 volvo s80 d5 and the exhaust side stays same.

My friend is mapping the car but he also couldn figure out the problem..

İts strange that is never spooling at full throttle. Furthermore, at higher gears like 3 4 5 6 it gives an engine fault code saying that "low pressure"

I have been logging some channells from vagcom, I can also post them here...

Is it a fault like "boost manifold pressure: deviation from norm, low"

In that case, it's a difference between the requested boost, and the actual boost the map sensor is reading. I have no ideas what to do about it though.

Yes the fault is saying something like that :headhurt:

VNT2052 / 17VB Boost Problem

Hi,

2 weeks ago I have blown my ibiza cupra TDI's turbo, it was GT17vb. After that I decided to make the turbo a little bigger..

Now my turbo is hybid; vnt2052/1749vb... The exhaust side of the turbo and manifold stayed the same and compressor side changed with gt2052 from a volvo 2.4 d5.

Now my problem is, when I apply full throttle at 1000rpms turbo never spools till redline. I can hear my turbo whistling with pain.

And if I lower the throttle a little bit like pushing 90% It starts spooling. However, I can not see full boost (24psi) until 2800 3000 rpms.

I was reading the forum for the last 10 days but I still have the same problem.

Did I made a mistake by intalling this hybrid turbo???

:help: I am using the volvo's wastegate actuator, can this be the reason of these boost issues?????????

I remember reading your last thread about the problems you had when getting this turbo made. Please don`t take this the wrong way but does the company that made the hybrid turbo for you know what they are doing and does who ever has mapped the car for you mapped this type or any other type of hybrid turbo before ?
