Hi Guys,

Well after 5 years of Vauxhalls and one hell of a lot of saving i have the cash to buy a Leon Cupra (not an R due to lack of finding one in my price range)

Anyways i am buying one in 2 weeks time and have a number ot look at - narrowed it down to a gunmetal grey (Artcic Grey or whatever its called lol!) or black with 30k or less on th emileage front - this has pointed me in the direction of a number of 53/54 plate cars - just wondering from your experiences are there any really obvious or well known faults to keep an eye out for??

Dad had an Octavia RS which had a nasty rattle from brand new on startup (his pevious Ibiza Cupra didnt) which i want to avoid - but any advice would be brill!

Thanks in advance!

Chris

What is the difference between the 53 plate Cupras and the 54/55 plate FR's?? (apart from nasty silver mirrors!!?!)

I think the FR is 180bhp and the 53 Cupra would be 210.
(Assuming you are talking petrol models)

I'm sure someone will post PDQ if I'm mistaken.

p.s. I like my "Nasty" silver mirrors. ;)

The only Leons with 210bhp are the Cupra R and they are only up to 03 plate, from then on (53 plate onwards) they are 225bhp.

I believe the FR and Cupra are pretty much the same, certainly in terms of engines anyway.

There you go!

My LCR was 225 (54 plate), so I stupidly assumed the Cupra was 210.
Sorry!

Looks like the main difference is the nasty silver mirrors........

Ok this is what the dealer told me... they FR & CUPRA are the same car (apart from the "nasty" mirrors) they called the "end of the line" models FR just so they could fit extra bits...cupra r bumpers & wheels.
So i was told that anything form a 04 to a 55 was changed to FR from CUPRA...
I know 100% sure they have the same engine & gearbox etc...

It's the other way around. Cupra became FR.

It's to tie in with the model naming of the new shape Leon. Cupra means CupRacing. And the R also means Racing. So Cup Racing Racing doesn't make much sense. So, Cupra (CupRacing) is going to be the new flagship, performance marque for Seat. FR is the second in line, under the Cupra.

So, where previously you had Cupra R then Cupra.... you now have Cupra then FR :)

Hope that makes sense! They introduced it into late versions of the Mk1 to get the FR brand out there early, I guess?

But in any case, any differences between the Cupra and the FR will be minor and cosmetic. So if the R is out of your budget or insurance scope, aim for the newest, lowest mileage Cupra or FR and you'll be happy as that Larry chap :)

I've got a pristine 25k Revo'd Extreme Blue 54 reg Cupra that needs to go in the next week or two for £9500. It's an absolute bargain and if noone buys it it's gonna have to be part ex'd! See the below link for info and give me a call on 07901 557905. It really is spotless inside and out and has a Forge 007P recirc valve and a Green Panel Filter.

Thanks for the advice though, i genuinely am like a little kid in a sweet shop im so excited about getting one lol!

Looking at the performance figures last night, why are the Leon Cupras SO much slower than Octavia RS??? i Mean the only difference being the 6spd box as far as im aware?

Where are you getting your info from? The Skoda vrs 1.8T equivalent is same top speed as the cupra but 0.3 seconds slower to 60, at 8.0 seconds.

The newer vrs which is the 2.0 Tfsi is 7.3 seconds to 60 and 149mph top speed so is a bit quicker!

You won't be disappointed with a cupra mate, especially after a remap, that will blast away those standard figures above!

Only problems I have had was the temp sensor going and a water leak in the tailgate from the rear screen washer!

Hmm interesting - Autocar quotes the Octavia RS as 0-60 in 6.7 and the standard Cupra 8.0 seconds??

Id love a remap - does it have ANY effect on the engine durability etc as i will be doing 25k a yr!

Got somewhat confused in the Curpa and FR debate. I have a Curpa 05 plate which is 180hp. Only got 9500 miles on it and cost £10.3k which I thought was pretty good. Looking at getting it remapped but worried about affecting the warranty. Also want a green panel air filter - does this make alot of difference? Whats the difference between a stage 1 and stage 2 remap? And do you need to run on the advanced unleaded fuel?

Mine's remapped and i've had it serviced with Revo and a Forge DV on at a dealer and it wasn't mentioned. I think it depends on your dealer but i don't think they'd care even if they could be bothered to find out. I got a green panel filter and didn't notice any difference at all but i'd do it again purely as it's cheap, washable and it must help the engine breathe more easily.

When you get Stage 1 Revo they ask if you run on Optimax and if so they set it accordingly. Stage 2 is really expensive once you've put the full exhaust on and apparently it's not that much better. I'd personally put the £1000 into a pot for your next car.
