Binding brake caliper

My offside rear brake caliper is binding. Initially thought the bearing was going but after checking the disc it's boiling hot, too hot to touch really.

Is it just a case of taking the pads out of the caliper and cleaning everything up and then re-assembling? I've got a decent amount of meat left on the pad but the discs have the usual rust around the edge and also some light scoring on the face.

Any advice is appreciated as I really want to sort this at the weekend!

The culprit could be a couple of things :

1. Pads sticking in the carrier
2. The slides that allow the caliper to move are seized

You will need a wind back tool to push the piston all the way back in to the caliper.

Thanks. My dad has the wind back tool so can borrow that off him, will probably follow the guide on this site when I do it.

Is is a case of servicing/lubricating the slide if it is seized? Or is a new caliper jobbie?

As long as you can get the slides out - then you can service them.

Whilst your under there - put a pair of handbrake hold off springs on as well.
If you do a search - you will find the part numbers - they are only a couple of quid each.

Ordered the springs. Found the thread on Briskoda and got the Sharan part numbers, although they aren't in stock until Tuesday. Still going to give the brakes a service in the meantime I think.

I'd reckon that you will be able to get them working correctly by cleaning them up AND fitting the external handbrake return springs - you might need to slacken off the handbrake cable a bit after fitting the springs. If you have rear brake wear indicators what out exactly how you handle this on the driver's side as you don't want to crush or nip the wiring and cause problems. Also use "a touch" of copper-ease on any contact points between the calliper fist and the calliper bracket.

Did this job last night, the lower slide was completely seized. Managed to get it out with a pair of pliers and a hammer. Got it all cleaned up and lubed. Also fitted the handbrake springs but think I need to loosen the cable slightly, as 3 clicks is about as far as it seems to go.

Good news - the book says there should be 1mm gap between the handbrake arm and it's stop when set correctly.

My handbrake only comes up about three clicks when adjusted correctly - the important thing is to make sure the wheel rotates freely when the handbrake is off.

This is my next job, same caliper too.

Dont suppose you could post up the part numbers and/or the thread for us lazy buggers?

Cheers

Ta muchly - you guys, with the invaluable help of the BriSkoda lads of course, have just saved me from buying a new rear caliper for my FR TDi :)

I wonder if 'sticking rear brake caliper" should be a sticky, with a link to the BriSkoda thread ?

sorry to bring this back up but i own a leon tdi(same caliper) and my nearside rear caliper is sticking, just wondering for those who had this issue did you test it with the handbrake cable disconnected as mine binds even without the cable connected would this still point to these spring clips needed or a gossed caliper?

I thought that the Leon/Golf had slightly different calipers - but if I remember correctly, these external "helper" springs are for that model of caliper although not fitted to these cars. What you are describing is exactly similar to what to what was being discussed in this topic. If anyone with this problem on an Ibiza/Polo/Fabia removed the tension or removed the handbrake cable completely, then the brakes would still drag. One thing to check though is the direction of rotation of the handbrake lever as I think that is what is different on the Leon/Golf.
