hey lad/gals! a was wunderin if i cud hav any suggestion on how 2 improve the performance on my lean 1.6 16v??
av heard all about getting it chiped but not 2 sure about it!

don't take this the wrong way mate but please try using the queens english when posting. text speak goes down like a cheap tart on this forum.


anyway, have you done the usual exhaust and air filter mods? chipping a normally aspirated 1.6 won't release a shedload more power so i doubt it would be worth parting with your money. have you not considered concentrating on the suspension to make best use of the power you've got?

I would save the cash towards getting a quicker car or upgrade brakes, suspension and cosmetic stuff.

Jesus christ. What a load of tripe! I mean, the theory is all there.. but why would anyone fit turbo chargers or even s/chargers if gains were this easy?

(Btw: talking about that ETS SUPER GENERATION FAUX-FUR TURBOCHARGER Mk.6 V2000) lol...

Air filter, Exhaust, dogbone mounts, suspension will improve the cars performance. Oh and a remap will give you another 10-15 bhp....

you wont see a great deal of power gains, unless spending big money.

jonjay's advice is common on most cars and would add a few bhp

Yea I mean I was just answering his question.

Like you said if you want a faster car spending more money initially is the best option. It fustrates me when people for example buy a lower spec car and spend more money modding it to make it "go fast" than they would have spending the extra to get the faster one in the first place. Although you could apply the same principle to TDI FR owners to LCR owners...spend extra and get an LCR but then you open another can of worms in that arguement.

However each to their own and by no means is my opinion the only opinion.

Back to the topic, a few "cheap" mods can make a world of difference to the car. Air filter, Exhaust, Dogbone mounts are s start...

The thing is, the difference in engines, N/A to Turbo charged is the deciding factor in initial and end-game performance gains. The turbo creates fake HP. When it isn't on boost, the car isn't the same beast it is, once spooled.

The turbo just gives the short kid a stool to stand on for 10 mins.. he isn't taller, really.. but just appears to :D (I like that analogy). Fact is, a N/A 180BHP engine vs. a Turbo charged 180BHP... the N/A should outrun the turbo.

Spend big ££££ and you'll get a fast car, but as already mentioned.. you will soon reach the point where buying an LC would give you a much better launch pad to work from. £3000 for a 00 plate 1.8T 20v (or thereabouts) and 1.6 will feel dead and slow in comparison.

180BHP car vs 180BHP turbo car, the turbo will win because of the massive increase in torque produced by the turbo. Where the advantage lies in NA is that you get consist torque all the way through the rev range. NA car will run out though once you get to 70mph and the turbo car will keep on going.

You are correct that an LCR for example without a turbo is no way near the same car but to be fair the car has been designed with the Turbo in mind so you cant use that point.

You are right, when purchasing a car with the intention of modding you have to bare in mind what platform can do.

Hmm.. thing is, I'm assuming this fella isn't 20+ or something (Insurance costs are paramount to this debate, here). I'm basing that assumption on the initial post and the "text speak".

If that's the case, his insurance group is going to literally double if he invests in any Leon Turbo model. So that's that. :<

One of the reasons why i didnt go for the Cupra R...I could afford the car but the insurance premiums every year, servicing and maintenance are a lot more than the TDI.

yup the later of those few isnt what i checked before buying one and i went from an oil burner! i now feel the pain!

A lot of people chance not declarings mods. Sad fact of life.

Ya never know, he may fancy running the risk of modding the car, and keeping it on the D/L. (hah! I'm so cool..)

Hm, I still thinkg 180BHP standard for a turbo, compared to what could potentially be a 120BHP once modded, 1.6.. I still think they'd want more from him on the LC.

Anyone noticed this discussion has continued in light of the fact the thread starter is no where to be seen? :D
