With this being the first new car with a turbo i was unsure as how best to run the engine in, I was advised to keep the revs under 3000 for the 1st 1000 miles, then occsionally rev to 5000rpm until 1500 miles are on the clock. I was also advised to let the car warm up for 5 mins before driving (during running-in period) and around a minute cooling down after driving. He also said an oil change after 1500 miles would be beneficial. Is this good advise to stick to?

I would really appreciate some advice on running in a (more powerful) engine

thanks

Hi,

I have recently completed the first 2000km in my TFSI. I kept the rev's below 4,000 or there about for the first 1000km (as best I could!) and in the next 1000km slowly started stretching her legs. This last weekeend was the first time I really gave it a blast and WOW...

Regarding the warm up, cool down... just drive normally until ur temp guage is up to the normal half way mark. You will be doing alot of practising driving normally for the first bit!!! (It is quite a lesson in restraint) Cool down same thing just drive normally the last few minutes or if you have had a blast and need to stop let the engine idle for 30-60sec

Always press the clutch when you start the engine. Always press the clutch when you turn the engine off. This makes it less stressful and one more thing your engine doesn't have to turn.
Running in period, give it some welly from the go. Much better than labouring the engine, obviously be careful with it for a few 100 miles, but thats all.

Don't baby it too much!

Cylinder bores are these days very well machined, so the cross-hatch pattern that helps "file" the piston rings into a nice seal don't last long, so it's best to thrash it, but not load it (i.e. low revs/full throttle in a high gear is BAD), high revs, light throttle in a low gear is good.

Use lots of engine braking to "suck" the crap back off the pistons.

And *always* drive gently until engine (oil & water) is warm, not just when running in. Pity there's no oil temp gauge as on Foci STs.

Always declutch when cranking/shutting off.

Don't turn off after a hard drive (although you would normally drive gently to your house/work/shops for last few minutes anyway)... maybe only when pulling into M-way services you need to give it 30 secs idling before turning off.

DON'T do an early oil change, you need the swarf to carry on filing everything smooth. After 10k miles, then nice fresh oil and maybe a magnetic sump plug to prevent further wear.
