Hi,

Suspected dead battery this morning, but the car is not with me, and the missus can't see the battery rating on it anywhere.

I want to reserve a battery online with ECP as the price is cheaper that way, would be handy to be able to do that before I get home to check the car over... so..

Anyone know what they fitted as standard on the 1.4 (16v) petrol? (with Aircon)

ECP and GSF list 44, 52 and 60Ah for our car.

I think it still has the original factory battery so its probably fubar after 8 years!

Cheers

Smart thinking on the reserving stuff at ECP, I still get annoyed when I find that the price I pay is not the price I saw on-line - oh my fault I know!

The trim level in the car will in part determine the battery capacity required, wife has Polo SE so it has a battery a lot bigger than it needs most of the time - unfortunately it is at home and I am at work, so same situation as you!

Have you checked what Halford gives size/capacitywise also Bosch on-line catologue.

Once you get the size/capacity from a few places you will have more confidance.

Edit:- battery on wife's Polo is just over 12 years old, have had only one issue recently after a very cold night, it logged a current limit issue with one of the Lambda sensors - which might just be a low battery issue.

Bosch says, from an S5 quality one 63AH 610 starting current, ie S5005 (model type) or lower down the grade, an S4 quality 52AH 470 starting current, ie S4002.

Cheers for that, I'd not thought of looking on the Bosch site, it was Bosch I was going to buy as well.

I'd just been on there and come up with the same info as you, I was thinking of the S4 52AH one (£70-ish) as there were no S5 listed on ECP for the Ibiza.

I've not used the online click and collect before, will ask how much the 'normal' shop price is. I didn't have to pay online either, just take the reservation number along, handy if your not 100% sure you need something, but knowing it's there for a day or so :D

I've reserved things like track rod assemblies and refurbished callipers, really taking advatage of some of their special deals, but when it came to simple things like brake cleaner fluid, I've checked on-line, found them cheapest by far locally, then did the stupid thing of just walking in and buying over the counter - oh bother, not on-line price buying prices doing it that way, still it kind of wakens you up for the next time!

Costco can be good for Bosch S5's - that is if you have a card, they only stock a short range but normally, once you have checked the space available, you can find a modern "better" equivalent that fits the space perfectly.

Found it was fitted with a 44AH battery from the factory.

I stuck with the Bosch S4 52AH one i'd reserved, so it's had a slight upgrade. Reading 14.4v when running so alternator seems OK.

I used to go to Costco but haven't been a member for years, I hear they are good for tyres too.

Good choice, so that battery should last for ever, these engines don't seem to need much to start them, in fact in my experience, VW petrol engine cars don't need much in the battery stakes to start them, even my good old Passat V6 2.8 30V did not need a new battery until it was 9 or 10 years old, it got treated to an S5 BOSCH from either Halfords (at the right time) or Costco, suspect it was Costco and not the "correct one" but one that was better in the power stakes and slightly narrower than the original one, which meant it was slightly easier to fit it in. Costco, Michelin tyres, used to be brilliant prices when bought at a correct time, ie at Costco special deal price AND money back from Michelin. Nowadays, Michelin prices elsewhere have dropped from where they were, so Costco deal needs to be on to make it worthwhile, though they are good at ordering in winter tyres at still good prices!

I think that we break even or are just ahead by having a Costco card, my car uses Pirelli for summer, so not buying tyres every year - cheap for punctures/rebalancing/resealing alloy rims!
