Battery Life in Remote Locking

I brought a new key fob from the main stealers about 14 months ago and yesterday it seemed to give up the ghost. It allowed me to open the car but refused to lock it after my journey. My question is how long should the batteries last (there is 2 in the fob) and how do they fail? I would have thought the signal would get less and less oh and by the way the LED still lights as it should.

If you read the manual that came with your car, it says that once the battery power starts to decline it will only unlock the car! Basically you need to get some new batterys! I got two off ebay for a quid, but my remote has decided not to work so i got a flip key insted and that works a treat!
