Im fitting a 12V power point in the boot mainly so i can plug in my electric coolbox on the way and during the summer shows to keep my beer and barbeque stuff cold. I've run it from the cigarette lighter previously but now im running my TomTom and mp3 player as well i thought it time to put in its own proper supply.

I've put the cable through just like you would if you were putting an Amp in however i not connected to battery yet as need some info.

I've been looking at the fuse box (under the cover on the battery) and have noted the number 9 slot in the smaller fuse box is free. The only thing is that there is no connector there to put the cable on to.

Does any one know if the proper connectors are available to buy or are they just a factory/dealer fit?

I have tried using a flat crimp connector as flat bade fuse will fit in one, but there is a plastic lip inside the hole on the fuse box (prevents proper connectors coming out) stopping the crimp going in far enough to allow fuse to go in place.

If not then I will just buy an inline fuse holder, but just wanted to check first as would look bit more professional.

Have you thought about wiring it in to a current fuse that uses the ignition live? That way you wouldnt have to worry about the fridge nailing the battery when the car is off.

use a relay then to switch the constant feed from the battery using a ignition source as a trigger/switch. I think you'll find most coolboxes draw tiny amounts of current, I wouldnt even use a amplifier wiring kit just some 27amp cabling, unless of course you are fitting a amp at a later date

Not worried about it being live permanently as the coolbox has got a battery protector with it, so if battery level drops low it kills the power to it anyway. It supposed to allow you to still start your car but never left it on long enough to find out.
However always have a jump start battery pack with me anyway when camping just in case.

I finished the porject now anyway. I used a in line fuse holder in the end and used the +12V live rail on fuse bay 9 to supply the power.

As for cabling, I had one of those 'charge and start' things that you link two cars together by ciagrette lighter and basically charge the dead battery from the good car. The cabling for that is 18AWG 2c 105(deg)C the same as on the cooler so I used that to run the feed through. I thought 8 guage Amp cable was a bit extreme just for a fridge.

Cheers for the ideas though, as i now i could put a switched live power socket behind dash to power my Tomtom leaving the cigarette lighter just for mp3 player.
