Just hit something in the road on the dual carraige way this afternoon. Was a bang under front drivers side wheel then engine cut out.
When i had pulled over i noticed the passenger side seat airbag had gone off and girlfriend was pinned in seat by seat belt tensioners! Should the airbag go off this easy?

Also brand new tyre on drivers side got a massive bleb in it now.

Started car back up and all ran OK but no power steering.

Just cleared fault codes with VAG-COM and now power steering is working again but car is dragging to the left, hope its just the tracking knocked out of line.

So car now needs new seat airbag and cover and seatbelt tensioner and also a new tyre and tracking at the very least. Might try see what insurance say tomorrow.

Fault codes were:-

01656 Steering assist crash signal

18017 Engine crash stutdown activated

01227 Crash data for side airbag passenger side

01214 Crash data for belt tensioner stored

00645 Seat belt tensioner passanger side (N154) (resistance too high)

01218 Side air bag igniter passenger side (N200) (resistance too high)

So all in not a very good day!

Maybe it is, cant understand why power steering goes off when it thinks you have crashed?
Best get tracking sorted then a trip to stealer to see what its going to cost.
Just rung them but cant book me in untill thursday

Sorry mate but its going to cost a LOT :( In my opinion you should kick up a fuss as to why it happened and (try to) get them to cover it! Argue the fact it wasnt even a side impact due to the damage on the tyre but no side damage to the wheel.

Passenger Airbag,
Passenger Pretensioner,
Airbag ECU,
Seat Cover + Fitting,
Tracking,
Alloy Wheel? Surely this is buckled too
Tyre.

Your probably looking at close to £800. Sirsparkser hit a kerb off the ice and it turned out to be around £1000 for something similar. Its rediculous.

Id agree.... I had a minor scuffal and my driver side airbag whent off, with no other damage other than a tyre and a power steering pipe had popped off.

I priced it all up, and its costs the earth.....

Ed's lists will about cover it.... thats what I needed, tho didnt need a alloy

The airbags will go off if the sensors detect a very high deceleration.

Normally if you had a minor crash, the bodywork would absorb the impact and lessen the deceleration rate so they don't go off.

But if you hit something with the wheel, it's pretty rigidly mounted to the chassis (just a rubber bush between the suspension arm and chassis) so any shock will get transmitted straight through, and the sensors will probably assume it's a crash situation.

That's my guess anyway ;)

from memory when this happened to me, it cost ~£2000 to fix.

For me, both left + right side airbags went off, and I got 2 new wheels.

I queried this with Seat, as there was no damage to the car, apart from 2 kerbed alloys, and the blown airbags, and they claimed it was valid behaviour.

Remember that as far as your insurance etc are concerned, airbags need to be fitted by qualified personnel, so the labour for all that work, isn't cheap.

Thanks for al your answers guys, i have found out i am covered on insurance for this and my no claims is protected so its going into the bodyshop tomorrow. Got a £100 excess to pay still.
Might have well get it done by them and have it back in A1 condition, i had it tracked up but to me its still didnt seem 100% so they can check everything whilst i am making a claim

By the way, you'll have to be careful about posting threads with a title like this, before you know it Carlo (Basstard) will be along talking about back seat action...
