There are similar issues with the door mirror mounted puddle lights on VW’s mk8 Golf where the projected image has become distorted - often within a short space of time. With VW in the UK, where this has happened within the warranty period, the puddle lights have been replaced free of charge.

I never had any issues with the puddle lights on my mk6 Golf which used ‘normal‘ bulbs; they just always worked as they should. Why does VAG feel it is necessary for a car’s puddle lights to project a model-specific or brand-related image that are prone to fail rather than just provide a simple, reliable source of illumination; the saying ‘if it ain‘t broke, don’t fix it‘ springs to mind.

IMHO a definite case of form over function with questionable durability - and a bit gimmicky.

Practicality and taste aside, I'm not sure why VW can't make these things last. I fitted a pair of eBay Chinese cheap as chips logo projector puddle lights to my Merc and they lasted 5 years until I sold it.

It probably comes down to what VW and the wider VAG are prepared to pay (i.e. probably not very much) their suppliers who manufacture parts / components such as puddle lights. If VAG are only paying suppliers ’pennies’ per unit in order to maximise their own profits, then that may impact the quality and durability of what the suppliers can make.

Mine got f*cked up while the car was washed at the dealership after a DSG oil change. xD

Estonia.
I asked them if the new ones were better.
They said they didn't know.
I asked to book a time for the beginning of 2026.

I wonder if you can open them up and remove the "projected" image id be happy with just the white light on the ground rather than the crappy image they now project.
