Auto lights and DLR question

Hi all new to the forum. Picking up my 2017 Leon Fr this week!

It has just hit me that on the pictures the light switch to right of steering column there is the option of off, sidelights and then headlights. There is no auto setting. The car has the full Led headlights.

I thought the car had nice looking led daytime lights? Do I have to manually turn my lights on and off like an older car? Any help would be much appreciated to understand the function. Thanks in advance!

The car does have DRL lights, probably front and rear for that age model which will be on all the time - you cannot turn them off.

Unless the switch has the auto option then yes, you're going to have manually turn that dial all the way around to dipped headlights when it gets dark. Same with the switch for dipped and high beams, it's manual operation only on that model.

As above, DRLs are always on unless you expressly alter the coding for them. The auto lights option is only available on cars fitted with the optional 'convenience pack', which I appreciate is crazy on such a modern car!

Auto lights and wipers can be retrofitted:

Or there's a DIY solution for just auto lights in the resources section:

I can't stand auto wipers or lights - never come on when 'I' want them on - or they come on when 'I' don't want them on!

Was on the motorway on Saturday lunch time with horrendous spray & very low visibility - and there were many 'newer' cars without their rear lights on - very dangerous! presume 'relying' on AUTO lights! which didn't know how to work in spray in the middle of the day!

Agree - IMHO more fairly pointless features that car manufacturers‘ marketing teams and product literature have persuaded us we must have.

I don’t use auto wipers - whatever the sensitivity setting I try for the conditions, they never wipe when I want them to. If it’s not raining continuously, I find it’s much easier to just give the wipers a single sweep by pushing down on the indicator stalk - and I can do that with one finger without needing to move my hands from their normal position on the steering wheel. The car I owned with the best intermittent wipe feature was a mk3 Escort XR3 back in the early 1980’s. It had a continually variable adjustment for intermittent wipe rather than the four settings that VAG cars have. I could always get the intermittent wipe in that car to match the weather conditions.

I do leave my headlight switch in the Auto position because if I switch it to off, I get an annoying permanent message on the instrument display telling me put the lights on auto! (can’t remember the exact words). I still turn the headlight switch to the ‘on‘ position during daylight hours if due to the weather conditions, I feel I should have my lights on (e.g. heavy rain, fog etc) - just to make sure they’re on.

Agreed on the rear lights - I added the coding to permanently have my rears on as DRL's too if you haven't already done it:

DRL on in rear.
With this modification when you have the DRLs on, the outer taillights will also light.

^^ This.
My old VW T4 vans had this infinitely variable adjustment. Brilliantly simple idea.

Does this make it look like the lights are on within the car? ie. two LEDs on near rear view mirror, dash and centre console lit up, etc. Can you also set the inner rear lights on too?

No it doesn't, it literally just adds the outer rears to the DRL logic group (German Coding Translation - Daytime running lights also activate parking lights) - so no inner lights on until the lights properly come on (via Auto or manual).

I believe you can code extra lighting to be active though, I remember seeing an adaption somewhere to flash the interior ambient lighting orange when indicating etc

There were two different ways to code the pre-FL cars.

If you use the simple method, then the submarine lights in the overhead console were on all the time (as per lights on). If you code the tail lights individually then this is not the case.

My FL car has front/rear DRLs from the factory.

Curious, my 2018 facelift had front DRLs enabled but nothing on the back... I had to enable it. Do you think someone had already set yours, or had the previous owner turned mine off?

Our ST delivered new in May 2018 has DRLs front and rear enabled as default.
