Auto Box Question

Hi there,

Our 1998 1.4 MPI Auto, when cold, has what I would call quite a jerky change from 1st to 2nd gear. It seems to get better once warmed up.

Is this normal? If not, any suggestions about why it might be?

Thanks in advance,
Stu

Mine does it. Like every car it needs warming up slowly. Its normal on the Auto Boxes on most cars. My friends Cayenne does it too.

Hey your welcome. How you getting on with the wee beastie ? This your 1st Automatic ? Im pretty impressed with my Arosa, 1st Automatic I have had and although it took some getting used to I likes it !! They are quite nippy and for a 4 speed gearbox suprisingly fast

Hi there,

Yes, first auto car owned, though I've driven a few different ones in the past. We wanted something small and easy-to-drive for my wife who's a novice driver and this seems to fit the bill perfectly so far. Really like it - well built and decent fun to drive. We've had a couple of teething problems - dead battery that was replaced yesterday and the dead light on the gear selector, but for a 9 year old car it is in great shape. I'm going to clean it up tomorrow.

In answer to your question on the other thread, the pic of the Fabia was taken in Charmouth in Dorset.

I like the colour of yours - haven't seen any others in that green.

Cheers,
Stu

Jerky autobox when cold

Check the gearbox oil. As the oli warms up it thins out which may explain why your car is jerking when cold and fine once warmed up. Oil may need replacing or topping up.

Thanks for that. Is checking the gearbox fluid level easy.. or best carried out at a garage?

Many thanks.

I usually find you just let the engine idle for a couple of minutes and its fine (suggests that the oil needs a bit of time to get round maybe?)

Thanks. I did notice this too. I am going to get the car booked in for a service shortly, so will get the garage to check the gearbox fluid at the same time - I'll let you all know if this resolves the issue.

Cheers,
Stu
