Yup:D Those power increase figures are a joke. It will suck in hot air from the engine bay and you might actually get less power. The better ones are more expensive but they are enclosed and have a cold air pipe leading to the bumper grille, meaning its getting nice cold, dense air. The filter tends to be better quality as well.

Would be interesting to know what the difference is between the 'Universal' generic crap and a K&N. At the end of the day, its a piece of cotton gauze.
I don't know where K&N manufacture their filters, but I can't see theres a million companies maufacturing different cotton gauzes. This is why I worry you are just paying for the name, and the gauzes come from the same factory.

Of course, i have no way to prove this! Ive heard that K&N gauze is finer and will let less particles through, but has it actually been proved through tests that cheap universal filters filter any worse than the more expensive brand names?

In all fairness they are just fancy looking your going to get much more power out of it. For the price and the bauble in the engine bay your better off changing the air filter rather than pulling your engine apart. What Model Arosa is it for anyways ?

I presume in your first sentence you mean 'not' going to get more power out of it? :D

I realise that air filters have limited 'performance' benefits, especially on something like an Arosa (mines the 1.4 8v mt). Any N/A 8v engine below 1.6 you're not going to see much change using a filter, but Ive had some reasonable gains on two turbo'd cars i've owned.

For a relatively inexpensive upgrade that anyone can do- its tempting for most of us, if only for the sound!

Also- you said something about changing the filter rather than pulling your engine apart?

Yeah sorry I did mean not much more power out of it. If you put an induction kit on, to my knowledge the engine cover needs to be either removed or cut up. I had a look into it on my car but, as its an auto it was pointless. Might be different on your model.

i spoke to jodie at midlands vw today to look at induction kits and 90% of them come without breathers and neglect to tell you that especially the 1.4 16v psorts but all the vw engines breath heavily and all the induction kit cause its flat spots and smelly cars!! panel filters ftw. eithe rk and n or piecross :) same power gain less hassle!!
