Whilst drving my wifes 52 plate 1.9 Tdi today (after getting a fresh MOT ticket:doh:). I was reversing round a corner to turn round, this involved some gradient and full lock, I got a clanging noise, the noise a spring makes. I thought, bugger snapped spring as know this seems to happen on newer VAG cars. Got home, jacked it up but what I found is what looks like the top mount spring plate come adrift from the top mount. The spring is secured against the top mount, the top plate is still present and is basically just connected to the dust shield.

Question is, can this be re assembled or do I need a new top mount? Was hoping I could use spring compressors and try and relocate without removing the strut

Yes, but this sounds to me like the reason that the top mount bit has dropped down is because the spring has broken. As far as I can remember, there is no scope for the top mount to fall apart if the top of the spring is still the original shape and the spring is the same length. What normally happens is that the spring snaps and as there is instantly a lack of pressure on the top mounting, the bearing collapses and falls inside the spring. Looks like you will need a couple of new springs and top bearings - as well as some nuts and bolts.

ours has just had 2 new ones under warranty and a new spring for driver's side.

The new ARB didn't cure the knock. All seems ok ....so far
