Anyone know where the Temp Sensor is on a TDI 110 Engine ?

Hi All,

I have been experiencing cold start problems with my Toledo 110 TDI..

I wait for the glow plug light to go out (about 5 sec on a cold day) but then it never starts.
But, if I turn on the ignition, wait for the light to go out, then turn the ignition off and then repeat again, it always starts straight away !! Glow plugs must be working then ?

Starts fine when warm to..

I have replaced all 4 glow plugs thinking they were the problem, but it still does it.

So my current thinking is that the glow plugs may not be on for long enough.
What do you guys think ?

So, I have been recommended to change the Temp sensor (thanks Sarah) as this plays a part in controlling the glow plugs.

I have measured the Coolant temp using Block 1 on Vagcom and it doesn't seem far out on a cold icy morning (maybe a degree or two higher than ambient indicated by the clock), but I want to change it just in case.

I have a new Green top version of the sensor which I got from GSF (tad under 20 quid), but the thing is, I can't find the sensor fitted on the car !!

Does anyone know where it is on a TDI 110 (non-PD) engine ?
I have removed the engine cover, but still cant find it !

I have tried searching, and found loads written about these sensors, but no information as to where it is on this engine..

Any help or maybe some pictures would be really appreciated.

Thanks

To the left of the engine as you look at it, in the water housing on the side of the head

Bizarre number of different answers in this thread.

On my 51-plate Toledo TDI 110, ASV engine, the sensor is screwed in to the coolant manifold at the right-hand end of the block as you look at it from the front of the car. There is a large circular device (the vacuum pump) on the end of the camshaft cover. Under that, attached to the end of the cylinder head, is a black pipe manifold, with hoses going front, back, and down out of it and some small hoses attached to them. Underneath the hose going back towards the passenger compartment, you will find the temperature sensor. Elsawin confirms this, and gives the sensor number, G62. AHF engines look the same on Elsawin.

The sensor in the expansion tank is the coolant level sensor.

The only thing in the thermostat housing is the thermostat, and that is almost invisible, in-line with the radiator bottom hose at the connection to the engine block.

Thanks for that..

Just been and had a look at my motor (its an ASV, the same as yours), and I think I have now found the sensor..
As you say, down the right hand side of the engine, facing backwards.

Look a right pig to change, as can't really see it, just feel it with finger tips.
Loads of pipes and stuff in the way.

So, next question, has anyone got ant experience of changing them ?

I think they are just cliped in rather than bolted, but still a git of a job !

Do I need to drain the coolant ?

Thanks for your help.
