To help it "feel" and drive better you could try... ECU remap, rear ARB, spacers (on rear wheels), uprated suspension (either springs and dampers or coilovers), uprated bushes on all suspension and ARBs, strut brace...

Balanced lighter flywheel, balanced pistons and rods, Head ported/polished, bigger valves, cams, remap then, safety e.g bigger brakes etc There is quite a lot that could be done, just not worth it IMHO

You are going to spend a fortune getting a N/A petrol to feel noticeably quicker. It's probably better to sell up and replace it with a quicker/turbo'd car if you that bored.

Thats just my opinion

Not sure how similar they are to the Golf's 2.0 8v (in the Mk3 and Mk4), but theres plenty of bolt on parts available for the golfs. American but look at this anyway http://www.eurotuner.com/techarticles/eurp_0708_volkswagen_engine_tuning/index.html

Could charge it fairly easily if you are spanner handy. But simple stuff, I would be looking at a proper induction kit, full exhaust with decat/sports cat, cams, lighter pullers, head bolts and mapped to suit

edit, come to our monthly meets in derby too, see the thread in the central meets section
