Anybody got reasonably priced insurance?

Been looking for quotes on a V5 and had prices around £650-£720 p/a for 29 year old driver, 29 year old bint also covered (will get slapped if she reads that remark! :p ) and with a SP60 on the license :grump: (I think the copper would have given me a fixed penalty notice were it not for the fact that he couldn't keep up. I saved further retribution by suppressing the urge to utter the words "It's the pedal near the door, bitch!!")

I checked Churchill, since they have a link on the site and was quoted well over £800! Am I paying that? Not bloodly likely; I burn my money on petrol and front tires only!

So, ladies and gents please sound off - who are you insured by, what are you paying, which Toledo do you drive and have you got claims or points against you.

Thanks and all the best

£396 with Tesco for my V5. Kept on driveway, clean licence, 47 yr old male, protected NCB. According to Tesco (and I checked by getting a quote) that 3 points for speeding (is that an SP60?) won't affect the price.

Accordingly to the insurance bods "All other factors being equal, after the age of 37 years the male is considered less of an insurance risk than his female counterpart, and this continues into old age." so, if you're sharing the driving genuinely it may be cheaper for her to insure it.

Before someone tells me that's rubbish, I'm only quoting the the insurers.

I've found Direct Line VERY good. i'm 26 with full no claims but a DR10 and i'm paying £834 which is anywhere from £500-1000 cheaper than anywhere else. This is on a MY03 Leon Cupra. I've also been told that Tesco are very good too.

Thanks for your responses folks. I'll check each of the companies mentioned. However, I fear my quote will now go up loads as my no-claims wasn't protected when some scrote ran into the car and scampered off without leaving any details

Hi all - sorry to dredge up an old thread, but I thought I'd add my experiences and see if anyone has any up to date cheap companies I've missed?

So, 29yr old male driver with clean licence, driving a '99 V5 worth £3k.

Egg - £317 / £353 (Web/Renewal price)
Sainsburys - £290.92
First ALternative - £338
Admiral - £280 (with £1000 excess)
Direct Line - £267
Elephant - £276
Tesco - £373
Privilege - £262
Swift Cover - £280

Privilege is winning so far - please let me know any glaring omissions.

Cheers.

Try putting your details through www.confused.com as they will compare a number of different companies (including some you list) without you having to re-enter the info. Be careful then to ensure quotes are like for like and tinker around with voluntary excess/courtesy car/legal cover options.

Isn't confused owned by Chuchill?

I think they are part of Admiral so will inevitably have all the insurers owned by them (Elephant, etc, etc), but they do also compare the likes of RAC, Tescos, Direct Line, some local high street brokers and others who use AXA like Qwik Fit, etc.

Places like moneysupermarket do other comparisons. I tend to try confused, moneysupermarket plus one or two that I don't see on their lists. I does mean you can test out perhaps 40 companies by submitting your details just twice (one on each site). Confused found the best deals for me these past two years. I have never ended up renewing with the same insurer year on year, even though I always go back to see if they will beat my best quote. Saved at least £100 on each car we own over our renewal quote.

Evening, SWMBO obeyed used confused and they were excellent. I tried them and my own bank (HSBC) were marginally cheaper so went with them. In the past I've found Egg and Tesco to be very good, but only for the first year.

Thanks for the replies - just gave confused.com a try and the best price they came up with was £347, so a fair bit more expensive. I have until the beginning of October so if anything else comes up I'll let you know.

That seems strange seeing as they should search Elephant, where you got a £276 quote?!

Actually, Elephant was one of the companies which was unable to quote at the time, according to the results email. Not sure why, it was quite late when I used Confused and I've heard that a few of the quote sites will not actually quote at certain (late) times.

Ok - went with Privilege in the end and here's a good tip: Adding my other half on to the insurance brought it down by a not inconsiderable 13%!!
