Are any of you MK2 Cupra drivers ex MK1 cupra drivers?

I got a mk1 tdi fr with mods, looking at upgrading to something newer, mk2 cupra or K1 maybe.

Just wanted to know your views on the pros/cons over a MK1 Cupra/Cupra R.

What do you like/dislike over the MK1, does the MK2 need any upgrades to make it drive as well as the MK1?

As I understnad it the K1 is different to the Cupra because of the bodykit......same engine? K1 is factory mapped over the cupra?

I had an MK1 Leon 1.6s and went to the Leon FR550 Tdi, so I can't really compare on power other then my FR has a lot more of it!
The one thing I miss about my old car is the interior quality, it was a lot better built and better materials on the MK1. The car also has a sleeker, lower look to it. Don't get me wrong I love my FR but I suppose people always have that ever lasting love for the first car which was my MK1, although my FR handles a lot better then that did, it always understeered no matter what haha :)
the K1 is the same power as a standard Cupra but with the bodykit and a few badges :)

Danny.

Well I did exactly what you are thinking of. I came from the Mk1 150 TDi and went to a petrol Mk2 FR. All I can say is it was a complete change of dimension. The Mk2 stuck to the road like glue and the acceleration was savage.
I had never had a high revving, sporty petrol and it obviously blew me away. I bought one the same day I test drove and I think even if I hadn't managed to get a discount I would have still put the cash down on the day. I absolutely adored that car but started hankering for more. I changed to a k1 after a couple of years which again was an eye opener. The acceleration from k1 is very different, much more progressive, but pulls all the way to the redline where the FR had been running out. The ride is much less crashy yet firm and level around corners. I just fitted new tyres to the front and it still amazes me how much it grips and how well it puts down the power.

With regards to your other questions:

Miss from my TDi: interior was much nicer, mpg (obviously)
Prefer with my k1: performance (still surprise myself), styling is so much more agressive and has so much more presence than anything else out there for the money, tuneability of the 2.0 lump (not explored it yet but was quite keen on going all the way to stage 2+).

Compared with the Mk1 Cupra R engine, you can get 300 bhp for a few hundred pounds with a simpe remap. To achieve similar on the Mk1 R you have to spend a great deal more. I am going to stop now as I am in danger of talking myself out of flogging it!

Oh and the k1 is in the same state of tune as the standard cupra. The difference is the full body kit and central exhaust.

Chris the MK2 is a hop skip and a jump ahead of the MK1 LCR
As above very very tuneable, for £2,500 you will have a 360BHP 330 ft-lbs monster on your hands.
I'd go for the Cupra over the K1 but thats my thoughts due to there being hundreds of K1's in Aberdeen and only a few LC's
When you drive one you WILL fall for it.
Power and handling are way better, WAY!!

Danny, TBH, I still walk up to the car and love the look of it.
Especially now it's looking mean and track prepped
I hated the MK2 Cupra for a start but my mates one is noting short of amazing and will be getting MUCH better thursday friday this week coming.
If I could have transplanted the engine from the TFSI into the LCR I would have done.

I don't think I could own a MK2 LC but doesn't stop me from truely admiring the way they tune and handle

Thanks for the advice Willie.

I've just been made lab supervisor after much hard work the last two years. I need to spend my earnings :)

I do like the look of the MK2 Cupra in black. MK1 will always be my favourite to look at but the potential power of the MK2 Cupra is making my balls all tingly. :)

get a test ride with a stage 2 plus one, or even a mapped one. You will then lust after a mk2

I've got a test drive booked with SEAT on Saturday but its just a standard Cupra. But i've only got 184 horses at mo so it's still going to feel alot quicker.

I had a Toledo 1.8T (booted Leon Cupra) prior to the MK2 Leon Cupra. Now while I liked the Toledo a lot, I liked it for some different reasons to the MK2 Leon Cupra.

That said, the MK2 Leon Cupra is dynamically better in every way. Looks will be down to the individual, but you can make a MK2 LC very attractive with the right parts if you dont like the look of the car as standard.

My initial thoughts when I drove the LC was that the brakes, seats, clocks, interior space and linearity of power was so much better. The centre part of the dash, MPV wipers and quirky design let it down for me, but I like the wipers now I have lived with the car for 3 years near as damn it as they tuck away where you cant see them and make minimal noise. The design is nice with the spoiler and skirts with lower suspension and black wheels and unique in that configuration. The centre part of the dash is still pants though.

Take a drive of one and make up your own mind. Buy one and love it, and marvel at all that can be done to it.

OK cool.

I know what you mean about the centre part of the dash, its just complete gash!

Anyhow - If I budget to remap a MK2 Cupra what other parts need upgrading before I get the map?

Is it the MK2 Leon that needs a better fuel pump? Any hoses collapse like on the MK1 Cupra?

Any valves need upgrading?

Cheers

With the cupra you dont need to uprate anything else really to run the map with 300hp. Other mods are only there to either get moe power or help use that power.

Running 315bhp for 3 years now on standard car no issues - mk2 more stealth depends on your preference.

I'm a Mk1 Leon Cupra R owner turned Mk2 K1 driver and I have to say the difference is in looks more than anything else to me.

At first I really disliked the look of the Mk2, infact in std form I still do but with the K1, the kit makes the car look great to me. Also helped with the fact that mines white, which I personally think makes it look even more special.

As for power, my Mk1 R was mapped and few other bits, and the K1 is currently std. The turbo lag is a lot less in the K1 as you'd expect and also it has this lovely noise from 5-7k which you can hear better if you take the parcel shelf out!! ;)

Handling wise the K1 is much more composed I think compared to the mk1 platform, suppose that's the difference between mk4 golf and mk5 golf platform?!?

If you've got any specific questions you want to ask them just drop me a pm or msn me on [email protected]

Cheers

Paul

This is a very interesting thread, reading about your Mk1 Cupra experiences.
I have a soft spot for that car, however never owned one, although like its styling alot!

I went from a Mk4 Ibiza, up to my currect, MK2 Leon (although an FR) .....So I still dont qualify to post in here!! haha. :D
