Am I wrong to expect better care from a dealer service?

So today my Leon went in for it's 3rd service at 3 years old.

To *insert dealer name here* SEAT.

Major service (on a plan), rear light cluster replacement (warranty), replacement O2 sensor (recall) and brake fluid.

They turned the car round quicker than I was initially told but it did help to say no to a health check and not require a wash. They were short staffed so it helped them and me.

However issues found are

1) The new replacement lamp is fine other than its not fitted quite like the original was or compared to the other side. It sticks out about 2/3mm more where it meets the lamp in the boot lid.

2) Small scratch on one wheel, close to the valve, assumption is checking tyre pressures looking at the dirty fingers that have been on the valves.

3) Scratches on the plastic trim above the radiator from tools when working on fuel filter

4) Scratches on the plastic trim under the windscreen, placing tools there when working on the new sensor

5) Dirt in the brake fluid, black bits within the yellow filter. They must have overfilled it and then taken some out, the underside of the cap, seal and thread of the pot was covered in it and nearly running down.

They were not there yesterday because I had cleaned all around the lid to try and stop this.

The car was cleaned prior to taking it in and none of these issues were present.

I asked for the screen wash not to be put in because it doesn't mix with what is in the car right now, which was fine except the reason why and the reason why I declined a health check didn't get through to the workshop and one of the technicians called me a "funny fossil, this fu*king bloke doesn't want anything"

Ok this is from a dash cam and they can say what they like about customers behind closed doors but it proves the communication was partly lacking.

I have absolute dread when taking a car to a dealer and once again they have proven to be below what I call standard.

I judge this by how I would do it if it was doing the job myself.

I am perfectly capable of checking tyre pressures and most of this health check things. They do look at you really funny when you say you really don't need to.

Granted many owners want or don't mind this being done and that's fine.

You do expect the odd dirty or oily finger or hand print here or there.

I had no issues with VW prior to this but this SEAT garage could do better.

I've had worse from another SEAT dealer where they poured more oil over the engine than in it and didn't put the oil filter in properly and it covered all the insulation material in the undertray. He is no longer with SEAT.

Thoughts...

Sounds about right for any of the VAG garages I've used. A well aimed greasy handprint and some white grease on the boot latch proves 'work' has been completed for them.

The health check thing is to sell bits and partly for warranty thoroughness e.g. they tell you about X, you do nothing, they're absolved for any Y warranty stuff. The wash is part of this too so they can inspect properly and keep the shop clean. There are lots who do nothing between services, wait for an alarm before pumping tyres and filling reservoirs so it is critical for them.

The lights are held in with a single plastic fixing so don't align easily. You should be able to loosen and tweak. I don't agree that techs need an explanation of reasons but they should have enough sense to see a dashcam running.

Have you raised this with the garage before name and shame?

I was lucky with the Vindis VW I used.

Pain in the bum they way the lights fit, don't get me started on Valeo quailty.

It took so long to go over the car and kept finding things they were closing as I sent an email with it all on.

I will be there when they open a 9am in the morning, expecting well that happened when you drove home sir and other bull....

I have been back this morning first thing and given one of the service guys a tour of the issues. He agreed I was correct the bring these issues to their attention (ironically he used to be a detailer)

Obviously left it with them and the service manager is back mid week.

Left it that what they say and do next will decide if I ever return to this dealership.

Don't hold your breath!

This is why I do my own servicing on vehicles whenever I can. But, having said that, our local Toyota dealer has been quite good.

I agree, this is why I try and do as much as possible myself. Even if it costs 4 times as much and takes 4 times as long......

I am so not looking forward to taking my car in for a cam belt and water pump change at 120, 000

My other car is 21 years old and I now do all I can on that, servicing, air con compressor and was brave enough to change the cambelt too!

Retro fitted a multi trip computer and looking to do cruise control next.

Sadly stuck with Seat for warranty issues and I have a full 5 years factory warranty from new.

Will look elsewhere for the generic servicing because that can be done anywhere now.

A friend is using a VAG specialist soon, I shall see how they get on.

They assume we are not capable at most garages, just been out to adjust my tyres pressure back to what I like them at!

Why does it cost more? Saving $100 an hour is one reason I do it.

Had a long chat with the service manager today and the workshop controller while I showed them around the issues with the car.

The light was sorted in a few minutes so happy about that.

Sadly the marks in the plastic and wheel are permanent but I can probably improve them rather than replace or repair. Last thing I wanted is them to try and do anything.

The next service will be done free of charge so that's something.

The were actually really genuine and upset that this had happened and will be fully looking in to. You can take this with a pinch of salt but I believe it to be true as I wasn't the normal c*ck and bull.

Pretty much got offered a job too. Changing the cambelt on my other car makes me qualified! Ha ha.

I'm afraid I know no more than it effects a April 2015 like mine, and has appeared since service last May.

I did have issues with O2 sensors at a year old and they never changed the offending sensor because the fault went away. They did change the wrong sensor in the process though!

I don't think the paperwork is anymore helpful either.:banghead2

What I do know is it's located down between the engine and the bulkhead!

Any idea which cars/years/etc are affected please? Maybe a link about it?

This would be good to know as my car is a 2015 (65 plate) 184, so essentially the same car as kevster184.

Just re checked the paperwork it says,

Lambda probe 23W8 recall

With a Googe, mostly shows up an Audi forums for the TDIs.

Strangely since this my economy has gone up.... about 6/7 MPG!
