I have recently bought a polo 1.4 tdi. and peopel have told me to keep the revs at around 2k even when im doing like 80 on the motorway.
Now am i doing something fundemently wrong with my driving or is this just not achevable. best i can do at 80 is 3k.

All i can think is that people are talking out of there hat.

You wont be able to chane the speed your doing at a certain revs unless you change gear, thats just the mechanics of the gearbox and its ratios.

So if in 5th gear your doing 80mph @ 3000rpm that is it.

was teh advice - keep the revs at 2000 on the motorway, or 2000 at 80?

I'll bet it was the 1st - which would save you loads on fuel

I agree! 53mph wouldn't be fun (but your mpg would sore)

the mitsi tdi we have is farely short geared, doing about the same - mpg suffers for it, but sat at 70 it's pretty good north of 55mpg

56mph was 80mpg though the other week
