altea arial position

Hi all, picked up a 1.9 tdi rerence sport last friday and am very pleased with it. Only gripe so far is the arial and it's position. it keeps snagging on my up and over garage door when i open and close it which results in some nasty twangs if I don't pull far enough into the garage. "drive further in" I hear you say but the problem here is that I want as much room at the back of the garage as possible as we use the side door to get in and out and there's only a small gap between the front on my nice new car and the tumble drier and freezer. there's a good few feet between the back of the altea and the main garage door which I could use if i had a smaller arial or a different type. My dealer suggested I cut a few inches off the end which seems a bit extreme. I can't angle it down flat by unscrewing the thing as it would catch on the tailgate when it's lifted up.

has anyone else had this problem and come up with a fix? I've considered reversing into the garage, but the layout of my property makes this awkward and there's not sufficient clearance on that side of the garage to be able to open the drivers door.

Thanks Ade

Don't take the idiots advice and cut some off the end. You'll feck it. They're not like the old metal ones, and they have windings inside 'em.

How about something like this?

Don't know if it would fit but a lot of folk fit these to their Mk 4 Golfs, so maybe an email to the sellers asking would be the best way forward.

I had exactly the same problem when I bought the Altea in Jan 07.

Have bought a Honda Stubby, but never actually got around to fitting it.

Try these two techniques though

I find if i drive in straight and then turn to the left so the car is parked in the garage at a angle can sometimes help.

Otherwise when you open the garage door fully and resting fully back, use the inside handle and put in the locked/closed position, ie bar sticks outside of door. This way when you reverse out you will miss the door handle and avoid twanging the aerial.

U could try a shark fin design like the ones fitted to new BMW's. Blaupunkt do some aftermarket items.

There are some electronic gubbins in the aerial as I understand it and it's powered down the aerial cable so whatever you swap it with it has to support that - least how I understand it - not like connecting a coat hanger to it as you'd do in olden days - that's why manufacturers get away with small aerials these days . When you look at the Altea aerial you will see that it's used on a lot of different cars. Now the sharks fins ones contain the satnav aerial don't they as well ?... I always thought they did.

Cheers for all this info, never knew there were so many options. I rang my local halfords and the guy said they've got some stubbies in which they'll fit so I'm gonna pop down there tomorrow and have a look. I've found some light scratches on the bonnet which they must have done preping the car which are easily spotted in low light if you look closely so I'm off to the dealer to get them to sort those out too-can't have any marks on the old black majic paint . I'll let you know how things go. See you later Ade
