Aircon and water problems

Hi guys, last post was how happy I was to get back into my toledo from my 330i but seems my excitement has been damped somewhat:blink:

Out and about today and the car was making a sort of rusty wheel barrow being pushed sound, not good. Didn't have time to have a proper look but managed to work out that if I switched off the aircon or pressed the econ button, the noise went away. Yay, came back when I pushed it back on though. This on off action resulted in a nasty 'screech' lasting about a second.

Got back home tonight and had a better look and I can say with out a doubt the noise is the compressor clutch, loose and wobbling all over the place. Can anything be done with this? if I try to turn the bolt/nut the whole shaft moves and I can't see a way of stopping it. Answers anyone? Searched the forums but people just seem to be discussing the noise and taking it to a stealer.

I think the problem has been caused by a leaking water pump, which I also spotted, so my car needs a new water pump at least and a new compressor unless anyone can tell me different on the compressor.

Idea's anyone, other than I should have kept BMW?

Ok, no replies but here's the update.

The compressor and shaft seem to be OK :)

However the water pump and a/c clutch seem to have had their day, not surprising really considering the car has just shy of 160,000 on the clock.

Question is how easy is it to put on a new a/c clutch, looks like it just bolts on..... is that it? Plus anyone have apart number for just the clutch and an idea of the cost.

And the water pump looks to be a bit of a pain, anyone changed one of these.

Any and alll advice welcome.

Water pump for the coolant system?
do a search mate...loads on this...
i replaced mine when the impellors snapped.....OEM was plastic...my replacement was metal!
you have to remove the timing belt to do the job, so you may as well replace that at the same time as it has to come off!
i didnt do it personally, the other half did cos the garage wanted stupid money...if you have a haynes manual (golf/bora for the engine code you have) and are pretty mechanically minded, you should have no probs......:)

The clutch plate fixed the problem, the splines on the compressor shaft were just fine and now everything seems just dandy £4.50 later:D

The water problem seems to have taken another turn though. The water leaking from my rad must have been blowing onto the block, hence i thought it was a duff pump. How rwrong I was, dufff radiator is the problem and that looks to be yet another expense.

My car is falling apart!!!!!! got suspension issues too.

where did you get the part number for, for the clutchplate, and how was it fitted.
I have now got a funny screeching noise in my car when the air con starts, as with yours only for a second though.
I know my cars a leon cupra but they must be similar

Seat don't sell the clutch plate on it's own, you have to buy the whole clutch unit at just over 200 quid!

The noise did start of intermittant, jsut reach down to see if the plate is loose on the shaft.

So i just found a cheaper compressor off ebay and bought the whole thing for £4.50 inc carriage. Took the clutch plate off and fitted that. Worked great.

I assume all the clutches are the same.

Sorry to join this late.

Sam, the V5 has chain driven cams and the water pump (although still in the block) is driven by the "fan-belt", along with the alternator, aircon compressor and power steering pump. No need to remove the timing chain to change the water pump :)
