adjusting free play in rear bearings

can somebody remind me of the process. tighten up till theres no play and the nut is tight then let it off a little bit? :think:

Sure thats what I had to do when I changed the rear bearings on my Scirocco Mk1, think it was in the manual to hand tighten only. Worth a trip to Halfords & read a VW Haynes manual for a Polo etc.

the proper way is to use a DTI gauge but no one does that lol. i usually tighten then come off 2 flats of the nut. iv done loads and none have come back ................ yet
