was reading through a thread on here about turning off abs the other day. but i didnt realise that there was meant to be an abs light at ignition for a couple of seconds which made me think if my abs even worked, so lastnite wen it was wet i went out and tried out my abs by braking hard on a fair few occasions and the wheels locked up, so im guessing i have no abs. i checked the fuse under the dash which is fine but i also read in the manual there are some under the bonnet but i have no idea where. could anyone help me out on this by possibly sendin me a pic of where i should be looking? and also cud it be anything else?!?! cheers

What year is your car? I don't think ABS became standard on the GTi until at least the 1995 model year (registered from late 1994 onwards). That coincided with when Seat dropped the GTE model from the line-up, which I believe did have ABS and an airbag as standard.

My GTi (Jan 1994) doesn't have ABS, an airbag or aircon.

Sounds like somebody has tried an MOT type fiddle as if the ABS is not working then the light in the dash should be on. Check that you have a bulb in the correct place. A quick diagnostic check should pick up a duff ABS sensor.

I thought even if you do have ABS that your wheels can still lock when braking hard. It just allows you to steer when they do lock up.??

No your wheels shouldn't lock up.

When you slam the brakes on really hard when you have abs the brakes open and close really quickly (you can feel it through the pedal). Which stops it from locking up.

I'm still waiting for my damned Haynes manual to arrive, but can you help me to find out if I've got ABS or not; heres a photo of my engine bay:

Where would the ABS system be; so I can find out if mine does have it or not.

It's supposed to be an SXE model, but I can't find any information about that model anywhere ... Which is getting mildly frustrating ... Which means I need to ask stupid questions.

So you can use the search function, but you can't read posts

:cartman: oO( Take note of the TDi in bright red on the front grill and embosed on the engine cover; and that MK2 TDi's are only available in 1.9 )
