Phill I'm having this same problem.

This is what I posted in Dannylads thread:

Danny, interesting you should say this, as I had problems with my ABS as my tire rubbed into the wire going to the ABS sensor on one side. I fixed that and now the ABS TCS lights come on ramdomly. Then when I turn off engine and turn it on again, the TCS light goes off and after driving 10 seconds the ABS goes off. That sound anything like what you had?

He had similar problems and turned out to be the fuse under dash. I haven't replaced mine yet but will do this weekend.
My problem sounds like yours. I did clean the connections though.

You getting lights? or an occasional ABS sound when it kick in when it shouldn't?

yer my car is doing this too, everytime i would start my car and drove it my brake pesal would judder and jamm, then the abs light would come on and it would be ok (but with no abs im guessing) my friend at skoda vag-gom'd it and said my abs sensor packed up, took my wheel and hub off and saw my abs sensor and wire had wrapped around my hub\driveshaft. need to replace it as soon as i get my car bak on the road and then it should be ok. i also need to know how much it is etc, phil i think you will have to just replace the sensor to be safe then sorry.

Yeah i get random lights, but its proper sporadic, never seems to be any sort of pattern and sometimes it just goes off and stays off for a while.

chrissy what you're explaining is what I had when the wire was exposed. But after I fixed that I am having the exact same problems as you phil. SOmetimes it will flash shortly sometimes it stays off for days and sometimes it turns on on all drives

DId you try the fuse?

sparkie, I am still working on this to be honest.

But what I am doing, is separating the 2 wires (as now the rubber casings are attached) then redoing them with insulating tape.

Should do just as long as they no longer make contact

the only other thing you can really do is buy a new cable connect is back up tot the ABS pump and then to the sensor.

Only I am not sure how the cable comes. IE ready to connect to the pump and sensor, or simply a double cable...

furthermore you also have to be able to feed it through the grommet in the arch.

hmm, the tape seems to hold for now at least, is it safe to cable tie the cable to the bottom part of the suspension (not the spring) to keep it out of the way of the wheel?

replacing the cable will be a ball ache i can feel it

yes, you can strap it clear of the wheel any way you want, just as long as it doesn't catch on anything.

i got the same feeling concerning replacing the cable...
