A quick question 1.9TDI

Hi,

I am new here (and to forums generally). Four days ago I picked up my 1.9TDI stylance and so far I am very pleased with it. This is a great forum and I have picked up a lot of useful tips and information. I am hoping someone can answer something for me.

This is probably a stupid question (be kind please). Yesterday I checked under the bonnet and the engine does not have a cover over it. Should it have one? I have never owned a diesel without one before.

Before deciding on the SEAT I looked at the Golf and Skoda cars with this engine and both units had a cover. To be honest the engine looks strange without one, the dip stick and oil filler are quite high to allow for where the cover should obviously be. Don't the covers help with the sound insulation?

If my car is missing the cover then I will get it replaced.

I said it was a pretty dumb question but I would really like to know the answer to this.

Many thanks

David

I have the 1.6 petrol and noticed the same thing! There does seem to be little holes to locate a cover in though.

I was half tempted to ask the dealer for one, I suppose it just makes the engine bay look a little tidier!

Hmmm - strangely enough mine was missing, but I noticed when the dealer was handing the car over. Just didn't look right especially when the dipstick was stick up so far.

They put one in from the TDI demonstrator they had.

I thought it was just the workshop forgetting to put it back on, however sounds like it could be the factory that's not putting the covers on?

Thanks for the input.

I have just spoken to my dealer and said that I am sure that it must be an oversight and the engine should be fitted with one. Strangely they didn't seem so sure but said they will investigate for me.

I await their reply.

Thanks for that. That is good news. I have now contacted SEAT customer services who are investigating for me. They will get back to me on Monday. They seem helpful enough so far but only time will tell.

This is very strange. It looks as if some have and some have not. Anyway so long as some have them they will have no reason not to provide them for us. According to my dealer the covers are a listed part at £90. Could it be that they are leaving them off now to save money  ?

Engine covers removed by Seat

Yesterday I sent off an e-mail to Seat customer services about my missing engine cover, I have just this minute had a phone call from them, very swift response.

There answer is that the engine cover was removed from the spec of the 1.9TDI and 2.0TDI from October 2005 (even though the car was only launched in September).

Not a happy bunny at the moment, but not really much I can do other than pay for one myself :(

So it's official now, new diesel's don't have them!

removed from spec.

Thats appalling. The idea of engine covers initially was to put off DIY mechanics.

When they started back on the mk4 golf people would open the bonnet and say " its just a box" and then pop it in to the garage for work to be done.

Some people seem to think they are used for sound deadening, but that is really not true as in a lot of cases the covers can become brittle and cause more noise themself.

I would simply argue the point and say this was not explained to you when you the bought the car and the example you viewed had it on.

Price wise, pretty sure the 1.9 tdi is about £65 so not cheap really. could always check ebay as on the tdi think most versions will fit.

Just had my reply from Customer Services. I asked if I could put one on. They said that it is not (as far as they were aware) a part approved by SEAT UK (honestly!) and so it could cause potential warranty problems if I sourced one myself.

I am appalled by this attitude of theirs. They say they improved the spec at the time by putting an anti theft aerial on and that they can change the specification whenever they like. They want me to go back to my dealer but I am going to keep on at them. It was not the dealer that removed the cover. I am waiting to hear back from them as to whether it is an approved part.

I know it is not a major thing but the engine looks as if it should have a cover fitted and basically they have been penny pinching removing it.

I have just contacted customer services again, as whilst digging through all my paperwork it turns out I actually ordered the car at the end of september, thus was ordered whilst this part was a fitted item.

Lets see what they say about that.

I do actually have a contact at Auto Express (although I don't know him), so depending on Seat customer services reply I might send him a mail.

Do it, then you can do a picture of you sat on the bonnett with arms folded and a serious look on your face, with headline

" Disgruntled customer can't "SEAT" the funny side of missing engine cover "

it'll be great.
