Can anybody tell me if my '97 16v should have ABS? I thought these all did and under the bonnet there is something that definately looks like an ABS pump (big block of ally with copper pipes coming out of it). but the other day I had to stamp on the brakes to avoid a kid that ran out from behind a parked car (stopped well in time luckilly) but my wheels definately locked up big time (from 30mph) and there was no kickback from the brake pedal like you do when the ABS cuts in. (road was damp there was at least 2 skid marks on the road , one left and one right) no ABS light illuminates on the dash. could it be knackered and somebody has taken the bulb out of the dash? or are some valvers just not equiped with abs? if mine does have it then I really need to get it working cos if i'm lugging the extra weight of it around then it may as well do something! migh be handy on a wet road too!

Yep that'll be the ABS unit. As you said, perhaps someone took the bulb out - try replacing it and see what happens! Then you can use vag-com to find out where the problem is.
If it's a sensor, they're fairly easy to change.
i wud change all 4 and same time ... i going to do that to mine then you know that all four are at best can be
