bill didn't you have the quaife synchro 6spd box and you didn't like it and you said the 5spd standard box was better?
I had 6spd quaife synchro in my mk4 golf.. hated it
I had quaife 6spd dog box in my
ibiza.. hated it
had my 02J std box until it expired (2nd gear teeth ripped off).. loved it apart from the synchro's baulking at high rpm changes (7800rpm)
My 02A replacement was slightly shorter geared than the 02J was, but otherwise was fine. (until that too broke recently, 5th gear teeth ripped off)
The quaife 6spd synchro *should* be ok, but they use the VW synchro rings which dont like high rpm changes. (weak point IMHO) - otherwise should be a strong box unless the selector mech falls apart allowing you to engage more than one gear at once.
*cough* Quaife *cough*
6spd just means more gear changes... 5spd suits the turbo motor torque, with std 02J 20VT ratio of 3rd gear being immence! 30mph-120mph single gear on BT
