40k Service on a 2.0 TDI Sport 140

Seeing as my car's warranty is up in a week  and frankly stealer servicing costs are astronomical, I'm toying with getting my soon-due 40k service done at an independent garage, but I'm struggling to figure out exactly what is done on the 40k service for my car (it's not helped by the fact that the cryptic service manual mentions everything in kilometres too!). I'm also concerned that an independent might not know exactly what needs doing too, so I'd like to go armed with a checklist.

I've also priced up a service on the Nationwide Autocentre website too, as I was happy enough with their service for my MoT, and I'm thinking a larger chain might have more of a clue than a backstreet garage special. Thing is. they only list their services as Interim, Full, or Major. Now I'm pretty sure the 40k isn't an interim, but is it a full or a major?

Or even better, anyone local to me (Leeds/Bradford area) recommend anywhere decent?

Argh. Head scrambled.

My 40k service on my 140bhp diesel consisted of the 3 filters (air, fuel and oil - pollen was done at previous service) and an oil change. I rang my local dealers and they gave me a breakdown of the service and their costs. The filters cost £37 in total plus oil and their hourly rate was £55 + vat (2 hour charge). I asked them about warranty, they said as long as it's carred out with their parts and done by a vat registered garage it doesn't mattter. I bought their seat parts and my local good garage done all the work for £45 all in :)

Posts: 329 I think my opinion of JCT Rawdon is skewed by the fact they had my car in three times to fix a fault (failing every time and seeming pretty disinterested about it) whereas when I took it to David Cooke in Oldham for a service they fixed it straight away... I can't comment on their bodyshop (although I wasn't aware they had one) so your mileage may vary!

Incidentally you might want to give David Cooke a call - not sure if they have a bodyshop, but my experience of them is that they are an oasis in the usual muddy swamp of dealers... Worth the trip over the Pennines I'd say!

Hi Dave,

Have we upset you since the above post? If we have let me know as I obviously would like to rectify any issues, if we haven't then give us a call, as you know from before we'll pick up your car in Leeds, lend you Sam's car and return yours when the service is done. For a 40K, which is a major service, we charge £199 for your model and if you had an MoT done at the same time we'd do it for £35.

Not at all Gary - I was delighted with the 30k service I had from you, and even more delighted that you managed to resolve a fault that JC**00 failed to find several times, I'm just more interested in what makes the 40k service £100 more than the 30k service! Times are hard...

Bloody hell you ain't kidding when you say that times are hard, I'm getting fed up with eating bread & water!

The 40K is a major service that includes quite a few extra operations and checks including the replacement of the fuel, air and pollen filters. These 3 filters alone account for over £53 just for the parts so if you then take into account the time to fit them its easy to see where the other £47 comes from. I think if you take into account that the service is carried out by a factory trained technician, specialised in working on SEATs, I don't think the price is bad and it does mean the service history is all SEAT which does enhance the value of the car when trading in, also of course, if there are any faults found during the service they can be dealt with under warranty there and then.

I suppose its like everything else in life, you can buy cheapo, extra value baked beans from Lidl or Aldi for a quarter of the price of Heinz, they don't taste like Heinz but they are nevertheless baked beans.

I see your point, but the warranty issue is pretty much null and void unless you can book me in before Friday :p

Saying that, I'm having my third steering rack fitted as we speak, so I suppose 4 days is long enough for that one to break too! :D
