4 speaker stereo activation with vag com

hi there i have just purchased Vag com off the Ross-tech suppliers site in anticipation of my new seat Ibiza facelift fr 1.2 Tsi.

i want to ask if anyone could tell me how you activate the 4 speaker stereo function on the cars that are missing rear speakers?

if my car is found to have no rear speakers (likely so i am told) i intend to fit my own and run the cables back to the head-units plug by purchasing the relevant pins and adding them to the connector block, i am also told that the cross-fader function is disabled but the capability to run 4 speakers is built in as indicated by the wiring diagram on the HU, and also the fact that the part number is identical to the unit fitted to the MII which has 6 speakers as standard .

people have said that the were able to have it reactivated by a ice installer or seat dealer using Vag com, but nobody ever said what menu and where etc....

hope someone can help, i have a 60 plate Ibiza SC 1.4 at the moment that i could practice on so any suggestions would be gratefully received.

Mat.

I would be very surprised if your Ibiza doesn't have 6 speakers with the new head unit fitted! From what I gather it was the early facelift models fitted with the old style head-unit which were hit and miss... I don't see why they would put out the same trim level with identical head-units, but have 2 less speakers on some. I have a facelift FR 1.2 TSI with the same head-unit as yours (with the media system) and it has 6 speakers.

hi Alan, when you say your stereo has no capacity to go to the rear speakers, do you mean it doesnt have the cross-fader option, or it physically doesnt have any pins on the headunit to connect 2 more speakers?

Yes that's right, mine doesn't have the cross fader option or front to rear as I call it.Must need a newer head unit I guess.
Also there are no speakers in the rear doors {mines the 5 door} don't think there is anyway, certainly no sound coming from where they are meant to be,the moulding is there in the rear door area.Have'nt had car long though so didn't want to start taking it to pieces just yet,but no fader option at radio end anyway.
Any help with this issue would be very much appreciated though.

Is this with the new style head unit which integrates with the SEAT Portable System or the old style head-unit? From what I have read I haven't come across anyone with the new head-unit that has only had 4 speakers (front/tweeters) in which case x9moto should be fine. I'd be interested to hear if there is anyone with the new head-unit + portable system who only has front speakers.

Alan, is your stereo like the one pictured below?

That is the new head unit that integrates with the portable unit.

looks like you might be on to something there biker, but im sure i have heard on other forums of brand new models from september build dates having only 4 speakers, and since that was the last seasonal batch my dealer has seen until mine arrives they dont know anything else.

however that stereo you picture below is the one i have in my current 2010 ibiza and that has 6 speakers and i very much doubt they would design 2 models for just the crossover period so i suspect it will be possible to reactivate it using vag (some have had this done) but you still need to fit the speakers and add the wiring.

from a screen shot i saw else where the plug that goes from the car into the stereo has the pins removed for the rear speakers too so would need to add them to the plug or some have bought a piggy back adapter that sits in between and linked the speakers to the tails from that.

That sort of makes things a bit clearer. That is the older style unit and it didn't come with rear speakers, it was upgraded for the 2013 model year to the "portable system" (my first picture)

I think, even though your car was registered in 2013, it is possibly a 2012 model year car.

So x9moto I think it is highly likely if you have bought a 2013 model year car it will have rear speakers :)

My old 2010 sport model had the rear speakers fitted to, but from memory I think it was the 2011 model year cars had the rear speakers deleted.

well fingers crossed you are right but i still dont regret buying vag i suspect i can use it for lots of things judging by what i have read, and also im pretty sure there will be a way to reactivate the rears on those older mp3 units but thats what my origional question was, i will have a play on my 60 plate and see if i can find a menu for that function it may help others with the so called crossover cars.

i still find it amazing that they would delete speakers i mean they must be the cheapest part you can immagine for them :/

do have another small question though, if you have the new stereo with the 6 speakers does it sound as good as the 2010 because i was really impressed with mine, i just added a sub and it sounded better than most of my friends installs, better clarity and trebble, most of theres just sounded muddy and over bassy?

Keep us informed then x9moto will ya please. Will need to do mine with vagcom then perhaps or return car to stealers and ask them.
Also the newer 6 speaker system should sound better if you get the balance front to rear set right imo.
My car prob doesn't have any rear speakers in at all then.?

thats good to know cheers, hopefully i wont be dissapointed then, im still curious why they havent added 6 speakers back in the brochure then because most of the other vers ie the mii have 4-6 speakers depending on model.

still seems like there is something very fishy here, i wonder if the base model facelifts get 6 speakers or just the ones with the nav system?

also can you stream music from your phone bluetooth to the stereo? i read somewhere that if its dissabled it can be turned on by vag too.

Mat

yeah alan i will keep you updated when mine arrives its not due untill january, and also if i find the menu on vag and you are near (norfolk) then i would be able to turn it on i guess, my dealer told me they wouldnt do it because it would be changing the spec after factory which they wont do apparently.
